Substantial increase in gas mileage. Why?
04/27/13 at 15:05:51

I always check my mileage. The last 2 tanks showed huge increases. I used to get 42 or 43 mpg. The last 2 tanks were 51 and 52 mpg. The only changes that I can think of to the bike have been the extended forks but I had them for a few tanks before the increase. I gained 10 pounds but I doubt that would help. The weather has been in the 50s and 60s the last couple of tanks so perhaps that could be it. I also changed my oil and switched to Rotella dino but I think I did that more than 2 tanks ago but am not sure. My flame shooter and farter on shutdown is also very subdued. Can the warmer weather cause this? Not that I'm complaining mind you.

Did you buy fuel at the same locations you always have?  Any chance that you make have gotten fuel without ethanol for the last 2 tanks?

When it was really cold this winter, I had one tank drop down to 27mpg. Smiley  I'm also not convinced that the winter blend gas doesn't get worse mileage. Smiley  But hey, I wouldn't complain!

I try to buy my fuel at the local ethanol free station. Sometimes it isn't practical. I do get gas at the same 2 stations unless I am out and about. These last 2 tanks had ethanol. I have the Raptor petcock, an HD fishtail muffler, K&N drop in, and if I remember correctly my jets are 52.5 and 155 but I am not certain of the latter. I wonder if it is the winter gas versus summer gas. After my mods last summer/fall I was getting 48 or 49 mpg. That was with a Screamin Eagle muffler instead of the fishtail I have now. I definitely don't ride like an old lady.

Come fix mine... at 36 mpg average, it isn't worth repairing it. Maybe some of your fuel economy magic can help negate the sail effect from the 15" apes and 240#, 6'2" rider...

Greg, I don't know how this could work, but extending forks may be letting you fill the tank differently. But that aside, I get 53 all the time unless I'm riding with a law abiding group...then 60 mpg. So you would post if your apple tree started suddenly sprouting $100 bills?  Grin
