Ballastic lithium battery
04/26/13 at 11:47:46
I bought an 8-cell Ballastic lithium-iron battery. It turns the engine over nicely, but I just realized that it only has 4 amp hours while the stock battery has 12 AH. Am I in trouble??

hi there, im sure your 8 cell will do fine as long as the motor is near standard, if you have higher compression etc then maybe a 12 cell but these batteries are totaly different makeup so ita hard to compare, this battery is equivalent to a 15Ah lead acid battery

It's equivalent to a 15Ah battery
in terms of cranking amperage
. I just want to make that a bit more clear. It will not hold a charge anywhere near as long as a 15Ah battery so if you tend to walk away from your bike with the lights on before you start it, don't expect your bike to start when you get back.

It should "hold a charge" quite a bit longer than a lead acid. It's when there's an amperage draw like Cavi's headlight example that you'll have a problem. In short, turn your key off immediatly after you stop the bike and you should be fine.
Also, check some of the videos on Ballistic's website. They really illustrate how different these batteries operate compared to what most of us are used to.

After a lot of research, I bought the EarthX battery. Other LI batteries might have charging problems due to the need for each cell in the battery to stay precisely balanced. The Earthx batteries contain extra circuitry in each battery so you can use a plain old charger like that for a lead-acid battery. They sure are lightweight and small and powerful.
I bought one for my FJR-1300. It works well. I will be getting two more,.. one for the RYCA CS-1 and one for the gyrocopter.

I bough the EarthX as well......because Gyrobob likes it. It is in my bike, but I have not hooked up the terminals yet or used the battery. I liked the fact that the stuff to equalize the charge in the cells was built in.
