Question about Rear Wheel Swap
04/25/13 at 14:31:03
So I am doing the gs wheel swap and ran into an issue on the rear. The pulley does not fit the new wheel. Really bummed at the moment!
In the "whale thread" Veslagen1 wrote:
I got a gs550l rear and it fit perfectly w/o any mods.
I bought a wheel that was supposedly a '85 gs550l... so to my questions, has anyone else done this beside Verslagen1 and Onederer, did I miss something somewhere, and does anyone (Verslagen1...Please!) have any helpful advice on how I can rectify this situation?
As always, many thanks.

I meant to go look at my wheel sizes as the widths you list look larger than mine.
It's possible the owners replaced the wheels or the bike wasn't the year that it's thought to be, or a transition year.
I see parts on fleabay every day that aren't what they're supposed to be.
In any event, the hubs don't match, not a catastrophy, either machine it or get the matching hub. You need a spare hub?

I just trolled ebay for gs550 hubs. You have one? I do indeed need one it seems. I'm hesitant to machine it down as it would need a decent bit removed...I don't want to find out it isn't sound while blasting down the 405! Let me know what you want for it.

Mystery solved. Different hub for later year gs bikes.

Hmm, maybe the gs forum has lead me astray. What do you think, safe to try and machine?

There's a number of the 85 hubs available for not too much.
probably cost you that much to modify the one you got.
