Testdrive: Nice drive, but oil leak?
04/23/13 at 23:40:56
Hello there,
After chopping my savage, (I did nothing with the engine or oiltubes and so on), I took it for a testdrive this morning.
Driving went well, but when I parked my bike and looked at the cilinderhead and engine I saw spitted oil there.... OH no!!!
I made some pictures, perhaps someone knows what this is...
It looks like it comes from the cilinderhead (when you're on the bike, left-side).
Mods I did (technical): Dyna muffler, K&N filter, 165 jet.
Hope you guys can tell me whats wrong!

judging by your photos on your Savage could not resist the sealant between the cylinder head and the lid of the type-it is not so bad... you will need to remove the valve cover , remove the old sealant and apply a new

Thanks for the reply!
Is it possible that the problem came out of nowhere? I drove the bike home when I bought it (before chopping) and had no problems like spitted oil...

Another thing that is common on the savage is the speedo cable ( the long stainless tube that runs from the bottom of the tank to the top of the clutch case) tends to leak as well. Try unscrewing the cable at the motor and theres a lil o ring inside of that fastener, if its bad itll leak. Its a cheap and easy fix.

Thanks man, I don't think it leaks on the engineside, because of the oil on top of the cylinder, maybe at the tankside (or did you meant that?), I'm going to figure it out!
I have ordered the seal nut and two O-rings to replace if it's leaking from the cylinder.
Hope I solve the problem, I'm so happy with my new bike!

If the speedo cable is sucking in oil and leaking it will be all over the top of the engine. It pukes it out at the gauge connection.
The plug cap leak can be a mere seep or a straight up gusher. Mine has seeped since it was new, and has lost a couple tablespoons, maybe a 1/4 cup, in 15 years out the leaky seal.
Speedo cable on mine started sucking up oil in 1998 when the bike was a couple months old. It stopped when I swapped tanks in 2005... No oil comes out the cable hole, and I've never capped it. My bike loses more through the alternator loom port than it does anywhere else.
That's what cfc free brake cleaner is for...

Thanks WD for your reply, I'm checking the speedocable tonight (time difference between here and USA) really curious where the leak comes from!

Hey Serowbot, thanks for the dyna muffler tin cap-idea, worked as a charm!
The motorshop nearby gave me the advice of a 165, I did have my doubt, and now sure that it is much too big. Luckily I've changed the bolts on the carb, so I can easyly remove the bottom and change the jet. I have a 157,5 standing by...

You have the infamous Head Cap seal leak - wind pushes oil to the back of the cylinder and is often mistaken for a blown head gasket.
Suzuki part was redesigned in about 2002 and the new ones do not leak

Hey my friend. Long time no see. And the new ones will leak too, just takes longer.

WD and I hope WDO still too - it has been a lot of miles down the road!
I am rarely here anymore - and I see backfiring and head cap seal issues still abound - lol but I ride one with those issues too.
Did you know I blew the engine on my 89? It pumped all the oil out on the highway and a valved seized - what a mess
Bought a 96 engine on ebay and installed it - purring ever since. Nice to have the 5 speed transmission too.
Wow it feels good to chat with a bro again - must be what 14 years?

Back in TN with the 98 Savage and the 96 800 Intruder. Now if you could find Hoggryder, Intrud'n and Stef...
Have you been back since Max Morley passed last year?
