Oil Filter

I recently purchased a  2004 Savage with 8,008 miles.

Due to info I found here, I replaced the petcock with a Raptor.

Today I change the oil and filter using Rotella T Triple Protection 15W40 with Redline added (5 oz to 1 gallon) and a K&N filter.

I am confused by a post/photo made sometime ago.

The comment was made, “ok newbs, pay close attention here...’ and this photo was posted.
Is this outward hole the smaller filter hole? There is a larger hole that I can actually put my finger in on one side of the filter and a smaller hole on the opposite side of the filter that I cannot put my finger in. The hole that I see in the photo appears to be the smaller hole.

Big hole points to the engine.... little hole faces you, and gets a spring placed between it and the cover...

Thank! I went ahead with the installation and put the big hole toward the engine....started it up and all seemed fine. The oil remained in the engine and when shut off, the level was fine.
