I'm thinking of putting a small Lithium battery in the air cleaner box, is there enough room to mount a 90 degree elbow on the carb for a cone filter (with the stock battery box removed)

I would say there is pleanty of room, I haven't put a cone on my LS650 but plenty of guys here have.
Here is the index link for the most common maintenance and mods-

And one with a cone filter directly to the carb-

There are other set ups and possibly even afew like the 90 degree elbow you want to install, but you'll have to search and find them. Unless someone else chimes in with links

Hey Shorty second thought, if you are going with a small Lithium battery why not mount it underneath on the tray the muffler mount connects to and then just get a K&N or other free flow air cleaner for the stock box?

If you get a small lithium battery - there is still room to keep the battery up top.....and the air cleaner as well. Both the Lithium battery and the clamp on filter are smaller than the original stuff.

There's enough room for a cone filter without the bend.

ok so the bend is not required, great.. I want to get rid of the battery box since the lithium batteries are small and light enough to easily fit in the air box. The orientation of the battery is of no concern either.
The shelf idea is interesting also, I need to look into that before anything else, thanks for pointing me in that direction
