Bad Gas mileage
04/20/13 at 07:02:59

I took a ride yesterday and I got 70 miles when I had to switch to reserve.  I thought to myself that this isn't right, My friend rides a 92 Yamaha Vmax 1200 w some porting done to the heads and a stage 3 jet kit.... The thing that gets me is the fact that he hasn't had to get gas yet, I know that he has a bigger tank, but also 3 more cylinders so logically he would have to stop more often I would think? This is only the second ride that I've ridden my bike after waking it from a 5 year nap... We've done mostly city riding so far ( 35-40mph stop and go) Is this normal for a tank or should I get more miles from a tank? Huh

I'm getting 52 MPG on average, with the 2.8 gallon tank with raptor I usually go around 125 miles till I have to switch to reserve.

I was getting 60 mpg with a 55 pilot jet but went down one size to a 52.5. I need to check it again.

Thats a combination of both. Around half and half. But I ride conservatively. I don't wind it out in every gear.

The only way to compare true gas miliage, is ride along side each other.
I always get 35-40.
My brother always gets 50+,........untill we rode along side each other,.....did "the Calahans" and "Boomer Hill" then he all of a sudden got 35-40 also Grin
And now he knows what riding really is Shocked

I could ride in a way to get much less mpg but at my age I don't care or need to play Johnny road racer on the public highways. Smiley

I normally avg around 44 to 45mpg but then again I have the extremely big Slip Streamer Enterprise II windshield Plus I'm a big guy.  I really need to do the chain conversion but every time I get the cash for getting the stuff something comes up and I have to spend it on something else. It's really to bad that the Kawi pulley doesn't equate to the 17/43 chain conversion combo or I would just get one of those and do the machining to it myself since I have the carbide tooling for my lathe to do it with.

Like most live in the sticks areas most of my driving is hwy speeds to get anywhere I need to go so my mpg suffers greatly since I'm operating in the high RPM range of the engine. I think the worst I've had to date so far is 39 mpg and that was going to a DR. appt and I was on the super slab doing 75mph for most of the trip.

Im definitely not a road racer either Smiley I just wanna enjoy the ride, and im only on a permit so Ive got a lot of practicing to do..... I definitely do not like the 25+ mph winds weve had around here lately, not fun for a noob like me but u gotta learn somehow other than that the savage is a blast to ride thanks Suzuki! How bad does tire pressure affect the mpg??

Unless it is your sole source of transportation, the bike is a TOY... last time I checked, fuel economy and related concerns shouldn't be part of the "playing with the toys" equation...

I quit worrying about fuel economy a long time ago on mine. I knew when I put the high bars, bags and full rear fender on the bike that it would suck down the gas in a hurry.

It IS kind of pathetic though that a full dress 1500 Drifter, or a friend's Twin Cam Road King get better fuel economy than a 652cc single.

If I wanted to ride for fuel savings, I have a 248cc twin and a 99cc single. Both Honda CL Scramblers with low exhaust conversions, TT style.

They're all rough... 5 pedal bikes, 5 pickups, 4 motorcycles, 4 boats, 2 cars, the vintage RV that doubles as a shed...
