License Plate Mount
04/19/13 at 10:24:32

I will be buildng my license place mount for my Cafe' convrsion soon.  The mounts down on the axle nut look fine on a Bobber....I don't think they look right on a Dafe' Racer.  I was thinking about doing a mount just behind the upper portion of the left shock.....I figured that would help disguise or cover up the weird offset shock/swingarm affair that the belt drive causes.

Then I saw this mount on the RYCA site.  This has possibilies as it will mount easily to the rear splash guard I made, and I just got some LED license plate bolts that will ligh the plate.

How easy going do you think the Law Enforcement will be with this mount?  I plan on riding in several different states and don't want to collect citations on a regular basis.

That's very ticketworthy here in Az...

I have mine mounted left side, up near the top of the shock...
... but, I used the fender mount bolts under the seat to attach it, along with my taillights......

Yea every state has varying laws pertaining to license plate mounting and visability. You said you are planning on riding in several different states but I doubt you are planning on ridding cross country on the cafe, you should make a list of the states you plan on riding through and check out the laws pertaining to plate mounting and visability in each. That'll make it alot easier for you to make a decision since you are concerned about possibly getting tickets or just pulled over  Wink

Same here in NY.  The cops don't seem to be happy when they have to bend their heads to read the plate.  We have the lovely plate readers on the cruisers now  Roll Eyes

Even where legal, it invites harassment.

Thanks for your feedback.

I ride mostly on the back roads around my home, and the under seat one would probably be fine around here.  I also live in the Cincinnati area and occasional trips into Ohio or Indiana are very likely.  I will be riding in Tennessee and North Carolina in a couple of months on the Dragon Run.

The quickest fastest approach in the under fender one - but inviting a ticket is not a goal of mine.  I will work on the plate on the left side behind the shock....and see how that works out.

This part of TN that under seat mount will get your bike impounded. Not sure about the other end as I no longer go past the TN River unless we have a family "do" in the Nashville area.

It's kind of "funny" that a state where turn signals and mufflers are optional, and there is no handlebar height limit, would be picky about the license plate.

Well.......I worked on the turn signal mounts and got them on, then worked on the plate mount.  I don't have room to mount the plate vertically on the left side - there is not enough room between the turn signals and the rear pulley when the shocks are fully compressed.

I can mount it on the right side OK as there is not any pulley - but I have never seen a plate mounted on the right side.

If the plate is not legal on the right.....I will either have to mount it horizontally like Serowbot has, or mount it on the rear axle.

Are plates legal on the right side?

Well....I found this site that indicates that most states don't care if on the right or left.....except California.  Some states do require the plate to be horizontal.

http://www.m109riders.com/forums/showthread.php?t=164492

I think I could make the mount to hold the plate vertical....with holes that would allow me to switch the plate horizonatl if needed.

And the winner is.........The Serowbot method.

Nothing else was universally legal, functional or would work with the turn signal locations I chose.  The tail light has built in turn signals, but I was not satisfied that those tiny yellow lights in the tail light would get peoples attention when they are distracted on their cell phone.

Now.....to get this stuff painted!
