Reflective Rim Tape
04/17/13 at 11:27:09

Has anyone ever put on reflective rim tape on their Savage?  I've got a 1998 one that's orange and I can get orange tape for it too.  Just didn't know if it looked good or stupid.   Grin

If you do it and don't like it, it's easily reversible.  Wink Cool

I put a 1" x 3" strip of white-ish silver reflective tape on the rear wheel hub just inside of the belt pulley so it can be seen from the rear.  You would not believe how noticeable it is at night.  It has a lot of visual motion,.. when going fast it appears that something is vibrating down in the area of the rear axle.  My thinking is that nighttime cagers might have less of a tendency to run me down.

I got the rim strips for Christmas '09, installed in July '10, the big photo in Dec.'12 just before I sold it.  The strips still looked good.

I can't for the life of me remember where I saw it (getting older CRS is kicking in) but there's a rim tape that you can't see and then they have small LED's that set it off at night. I liked that it was clear and unnoticable in daylight, but VERY bright at night.

Now where are my car keys....................... Grin

Well, maybe I'll give it a shot.  Now what color to choose?  My motorcycle is orange, like this one:

Should I get orange, since that's the motorcycle's color or go with white or another color?  Oh decisions, decisions...

The reflective tape is a good idea, its really big in the sport bike community. Most folks match the bike color or the trim color and almost all of them use reflective. I myself have black rims on my sport bike and ordered black reflective tape although I haven't put it on yet. One thing I will do is only cover half of the rim so it will catch thier eye as seen from the side it will make the bike kinda look wobbly at slower speeds.

Is there any brand of reflective tape that is better than another?  I see a wide variety of manufacturers for the tape.

I'll probably get white or orange.   I might have to Photoshop the rims in those colors to see what I think looks best.  Smiley

That just seems like a sport-bike thing to me. Unless it's purely for safety and visibility then by all means go for it.

As far as manufacturers - just look for the durability, it's measured in years. Even the cheap stuff is typically 3 year (3 years before the fading becomes noticeable). The adhesive is all the same. Just clean the wheel really good with alcohol or prep-sol (no glass cleaner!)
