Performance Spark Plug
04/11/13 at 19:08:46

I recently purchased a Brisk performance spark plug for my S40. The manufacturer claims it improves throttle response, acceleration, power, and fuel economy. When I mentioned this to my local bike mechanic (who worked for Suzuki for several years), he smirked and said "you're not going to get any more power from a spark plug". What do the experts here think?

Your mechanic is correct. The only thing these gimmick performance plugs do is separate you from your money. Well with a lighter billfold you may get a power boost.

+1

While some plugs may exhibit a hotter spark or a different pattern to the spark, they will not in any way, increase horsepower. There may be a slight advantage due to a more complete burn of the air/fuel mix but that is highly questionable.

I hope they didn't get you for more than $5 US for that "special performance spark plug".

The manufacturer claims...

That was your first clue to not buy it. Don't make the same mistake again with any product.

The stock spark plug works just fine in the Savage, and you aren't going to get any power improvements from an expensive plug.

If you want a plug upgrade for just a few bucks......get the Iridium plug.  The electroded are more durable and you will most likely get extended life from it......but probably not any more power.

How much extended life do you need? I pulled the plug on mine at its 11K check, and if I hadn't already bought a new one I'd have put the old one back. The electrodes were sharp-edged, the gap was correct, and the plug was the right color. At that rate, I'd think it would be good for at least another 20K, or more.

Unless the current plug has the wrong gap, covered with crud, or has a broken insulator, you will not see any difference in performance. I always though of my S40 as just a big Briggs lawn mower engine and the best thing I could do was to keep the filter clean, plug gapped, blade sharp and balanced, and the fuel fresh. Except for the blade, all apply to the Savage....hmmm a blade modification. Could come in handy in certain situations. Roll Eyes

Good hunting
