I bought the cheap ebay petcock ,but haven't installed it. I'm now thinking I should use the yamaha part instead . is it the same number for a 2005 s40 (5LP-24500-01-00) ? Is this link to the Ron Ayers site the right one? Thanks!

Yep......That Ron Ayers link is the one I bought last year and it is a genuine Yamaha part.  It fits any year Savage, Boulevard, LS650, S40.

rl153, the link ejid posted is the petcock I am using with 155 main and 55 pilot jets, no problems.  MUCH better than the stock petcock.

I bought one off of ebay (5LP-24500-01-00), it actually came in a yamaha box with part number and information on it.
