I did not see a good discussion on using regular or synthetic oil. Or a blend for the 'benefits' of each. I currently use a blend. It is soon time to change the oil. I am just looking for opinions which is better and why that is.

Myself I prefer full syn oils. The additive packages are normally much better then dino or blend oils. Meaning they have better cleaning abilities and also can survive harsher environments much better. Full syn oils also keep to their advertised viscosity under even extreme conditions where dino based oils fail to do this. Full syn oils also have a much higher temp range they can survive in before they break down and stop working as a lubricant in the engine.

Cost effective. And it is such a low compression loose tolerance engine that it doesn't need all the latest greatest gee whiz "miracle juice du jour".

It's a 1962 spec valve train (except in the 60s the Japanese were smart enough to use actual bearings instead of the head base metal as cam bearings). 1930s spec clutch.

Trust me, the bike doesn't care one way or the other. Just avoid high paraffin garbage like Quaker State and Pennzoil.

Reply #5 - 03/29/13 at 13:13:11 I use the cheaper dino in the winter when I have to change oil on average every 800 miles because of all the cold starts and never getting the engine fully warmed up. Summer time, I prefer full synthetic for those times it's over 100 degrees, and I have to set at a stoplight for 5 minutes idling.

Thanks for the additional info guys. I am also wondering if there can be any problems by using synthetic. I understand years ago there were leakage problems and the inability to switch back and forth. Research indicates that has been resolved. I just don't find much information about potential issues with bikes, particularly our classic design of an engine.

(Dyno oil) The big advantage of synthetic is that it lasts longer. But with a wet clutch, you still have to change at the same interval... Kinda pointless to spend the mony on something you do not use...

Following the recommended maintenance schedule for any manufacture is for dino oil. None recommend extended oil change intervals with synthetic oil. So for me if your oil change for example is every 5000 kms with dino or synthetic, why pay more for synthetic. I compare it to running premium gas when regular gas is all you need.

I am using Rotella T in my Savage and car.....works just fine. In my trials bike that only holds 800cc of oil (and someties gets turned upside down as a result of operator error)......I use an esther base oil (Maxima).

I am wiling to bet that most of us who change oil regulary have never had an oil failure - with either dino or synthentic. Most engine problems come from stuff other than using the wrong oil.
