Thinking about painting my wheels....any advice? (Read 244 times)

I was thinking about using standard Rustolium gloss paint. If I just sand it up with some 400 grit sandpaper and prime it first will it hold up well? I don't think I want to go through the trouble or price to do baked on ceramic .....

I haven't painted chrome my self, but I've had friends do it. As with any paint job prep is the key. I know besides sanding there are also adhesion promoters you can use which act as a bonding primer on smooth surfaces, especially if you aren't planning on taking the wheel off and breaking the rim down this may save you a ton of time and elbow grease instead of sanding.

Sand the chrome until there are no bright sections left. 320 grit at the finest, 220 will leave more for the primer to get sufficient bite on the substrate... Place slit drinking straws over the spokes rum hub to hoop, save a ton of tedious taping. Etching primer, Rustoleum from Wal-mart auto section. Standard or high build primer, scuff sand, top coat.

Or you can cheat... scotch brite pad and appliance epoxy, no primer. Have only found it gloss black, gloss white and gloss beige (almond). The most common paint used on lower budget build frames, rims, etc on several forums, car and bike (powered and pedal).

I am glad you mentioned the self Etching primer, I was looking at that stuff and thinking that it might be the best choice. I will be doing a red paint so the appliance epoxy, will not be an option. Now I just have to decide to get er done.

As for the Scotch....... I always do a much better job after a few .....I tend to take my time more LOL.

Been working on the same 5th of 12yo Glenmorangie for about 4 years... my wife doesn't understand it has to be at least 100yo to be considered good... Like drinking turpentine at less than a century of in barrel aging. Wink

Red? Go to your nearest tractor trailer supply shop and get the fleet type soy based. It holds up on big rig frames, should be fine on mc rims.
