engine smoking at startup
03/24/13 at 20:52:41
My savage quite often smokes when I start up.It does not last long. A minute or two I would guess. After that everything is fine. I have checked the oil level and that is ok. I have even parked it in an upright position thinking that perhaps having it leaned over might be a cause. I still get the oil smoke. Bike has about 4000miles on it. Help me out.

I need more information to make a guess.
Is the white, blue or black?
Is the choke on or off?
Has the carb been rejetted...has the cap over the idle mixture screw been removed?
Hold a small mirror in front of the exhaust next time you start it up and it smokes. If the smoke is condensation you will just get water vapor on the mirror, if it is oil you will see oil droplets that don't evaporate, if it is fuel you will see drops that evaporate after a bit.

The factory muffler holds an awful lot of condensation. If you've been running it in cool temps, you'll get steam and carbon out of the muffler on start up. Same if overnight temps have dipped into the low 40s or below.
My factory muffler was rotted out before 1/2 the warranty period expired. Humidity, cool temps, short trips, etc add a lot of moisture in there...
