I just bought one for my wife.  It is a 2000 Green and white with 1950 miles on it, prime condition no dings or scratches on it.  He had it listed on craigslist for $1450.  After I looked at it and found out it was in great well taken care of condition it rode great, no modifications not even the air mix screw.  I was happy to pay the 1450.  KBB had it listed at high value $1550.  My wife is so excited she is taking her MSF class in a couple weeks.

The "lamehomeO" taken from your spelling of Oklahoma just had me worried a little. I live 20 miles North of T-town.

I am very surprised by the current "list" and "out the door" prices for the Savage.  I am probably a bit spoiled by having enough mechanical skills to work on my own bike....and not be intimidated buying a used bike - but those prices seem high and a "NEW" Savage may be getting to be too expensive for what it is......a 1987 design.

Around the Cincinnati area you can buy a Savage with 1,000 miles or less for around $ 4,000.  If you are willing to buy one with 5,000 miles or so the prices go down to about $ 2,500.  A bike with 12,000 miles are usually not very pretty and the asking price is $ 1,500.  I have found that in this climate the bikes corrode a bit and the spokes, chrome and aluminum parts usually show some corrosion.

If I was spending $ 6,000.....I probably would not buy a Savage and would get something that my wife would be comfortable on the back.

The current MSRP for the S40, taken directly from Suzuki's site, is $5699. Add the usual dealership fees and you'll be easily over $6000. Here in Nebraska the dealerships do not collect the sales tax - the county treasurer collects it during the process of titling the vehicle. With the sales tax, property tax, registration and plate fees, one can expect to part with another 10% of the purchase price at the courthouse.

By the way, last time I took mine through Colorado, some guy at a gas station said "Nice looking bike. Is it new?"

+1, as a matter of fact, I just picked up a like new 2007 C50 with 2,000 miles for a lot less than that. The dealer had the bike for about 6 months and that is still a "winter price" and cash talks. The spring or summer price would have been book.

Deals are out there if you are patient.

Good hunting

The Savage/S40 fills a rather unique niche. It is the only "thumper" cruiser on the market. Other thumpers exist, but there aren't any other cruisers. The KLR650 and the BMW with the Rotax 650 aren't cruisers since they are aimed at adventure touring (and the BMW is considerably more expensive). The Royal Enfield is more of a "standard." Substantially every other cruiser is a V-twin. Adding that second cylinder usually adds some weight and complexity, and in today's world the S40 is one of mighty few carbureted bikes remaining. Even the Royal Enfield has fuel injection and a catalytic converter.

Looks like I'll be riding a new Vstar 650 custom...when my brother decides to let me borrow it. He's having a birthday in 2 weeks, so I gave him my S40 money so he could get the bike he wanted now. With the agreement that I would be paid back when local dealers were making better deals on the S40 - probably at the end of the year in time for Christmas. If the OTD price is still $6,000+ or I can't find a real nice low mile used S40, I'll probably look at a HD 883 Iron or Yamaha Bolt. But hopefully It'll be a new Blue/White Suzuki S40 for a price similar to what I paid for the '11 S40 I had - OTD priced for about $4,500.00, new.

Brother didn't get the Vstar 650 - he signed the papers today on a 2012 Red Vstar 950 with a solo seat. Said I could ride it some until he gets me paid back for my loan, but I still plan on getting a S40 just as soon as I can afford it.

BTW, anybody know if there will be any changes made to the 2014 model? Thanks.

It will be interesting to see if there will even be a 2014 S40. For the last few years speculation has been that the carbureted S40 will not be able to meet new emission standards and Suzuki will have to go to fuel injection and a catalytic converter. That in turn would probably raise the price at least a few hundred dollars, and if the gas tank isn't redesigned the volume taken up by the fuel pump will reduce the gas capacity of an already small tank. At least Oldfeller's "vacsucker" would go away.

I got my 2012 last month for $3988 on sale then all the stealership costs put it to $6k. Zero down, zero interest for 60 months came out to $106 a month. Have been following this bike and a few others for 8 months waiting for the right time.

California seems to be a sellers market and everyone on CL has a low-miles, mint condition, Harley looking Yama-Honda-Kawa-HD-Suz-Bue-Apri-whatever and is way over book value. The new bike was cheaper that what people were wanting for used comparables.

Last month my woman moved up from a GZ 250 and bought a red 2006 S40 with 3,100 miles on it for $2,850 at a dealership here in Michigan.   It came w/ a windshied, engine guards and saddle bag supports.  It is a very clean bike.    With tax and plates it was $3,037 out the door.  I thought it was an OK deal, but not a great deal.

We wanted this bike because it matches my red 2006 Suzuki S83.  All of our apparel is red, as well as my 96 Goldwing.   The S40 is 110 miles away.   Now we have to wait until the weather gets better so I can ride it home.   Cool

$5700 for a bike that was a rip off at the $4200 OTD mine cost new in 98? It's at best a $3K machine, the tooling is long since paid for.

Around here in the winter (like west TN gets winter, give me a break) that kind of money will put you on a nice used Big Twin. Evo or early production Twin Cam, but...

If I'm going to drop 6 grand on a metric, it will be a really clean low miles Kawasaki Vulcan 800 A or Drifter, 1500 Classic or Drifter. And the ones other than the A would be getting a wide 21" front wheel so they'd actually handle instead of wallow through curves. Can't stand riding the first year 1500 Drifter here with a 16" front wheel and 130/90-16 tire. I've put maybe 4 miles on it (it has over 90K miles on it, and had 1600 miles on it when my friend bought it in 2007). And no, he doesn't own any other form of transportation.
