Life span of chain tensioner and chain

I have a 2006 S40 and my girl friend just bought a 2001 Savage, After reading some information on this Forum about the Cam chain and tensioner I started to think if I should take a look at ours to see where we stand. Im not too keep on opening her up but I will if I have to . I wanted to know how many Km's most of these units typically need to be changed to see if I should put this on the top of my list of things to do ...
Thanks all in advanced ...
