I have this same issue, gas in the air box.

I've been through the carb, Can't find anything obvious.

Should I do the petcock update?  I think the petcock is stock.

The fuel just dumps into the air box, but only when the engine is (almost) running.

You can tell if its a vacuum petcock if there is a line covered with a spring-like cover going from the petcock to the oposite side of the carb.
