Oil level??
03/20/13 at 08:47:33

We bought a used S40 and there was NO owners manual, got one on order but REALLY appreciate knowing the procedure, now!! I take it, warm up the motor, turn off, let it drain down then check the level in the site window? Thanks and sorry for such a noob question!  Embarrassed B.J. Smiley

Yup,...  the tricky part is,.. the bike should be vertical,.. not on the sidestand...

Although,.. some members here, swear by checking it on the sidestand,.. and having the level just visible in the window, instead of at the normal halfway mark...
(a little over is okay,... under is not... and too much, will blow out yer' CC breather and make a mess)...

Wam or cold.....really doesn't make much difference in the level.

Just keep it in the middle of the window or slighty above.  If you look close you can see two little horizonal lines on the back side of the window....these are the factory upper/lower limits.

For the kind of oil....go to the technicial section and read up on the oil.  You need to have an oil with a high level of ZDDP and no friction modifiers that can make the clutch slip.

Here is the oil thread:

I don't worry about warming up the engine first unless I have just changed the oil. I don't know why more people on here don't use the telescoping mechanics mirror to check the oil. Just stand beside the bike, straighten it up and wait for the oil to fill the glass about halfway or wherever you feel it should be. Takes about 30 seconds in cold weather. Immediately in summer or hot. My mirror is right beside my bike on a shelf. Tire guage, too.  Smiley

Where do you get your shelf brackets?

Two

How do you get your bike on & off of it?

Handbook states run engine for a few minutes, stop engine for three minutes, hold machine vertically and inspect through inspection window. Oil should be about three quarters up the window. I'm pricing a telescopic mirror.

do yourself a favor, find a piece of wood/brick about an 1" and a half thick and put it under your kickstand.  That should put it just about vertical, but in danger of tipping unless you bump it, the dog jumps on it, or a strong gust of wind catches it.  Now you can crouch down and see just fine.

bricks are cheaper than mirrors and I got enough luck as it is.   Huh

As far as not having an owners manual, go here.

Some folks in countries without copywrite laws have posted some of such up on the internet ....

Thanks all for the "CLUE" on the checking the oil, thought it was the right way, the wife had a 86 and 96 Savage but that was a looong time ago, just couldn't remember. BTW the "links" for online manuals don't work and some are not in english, again thanks and have a most excellent day! Smiley

Verslagen, made up a piece of wood 2 1/2"thick, bike is 95+ per cent vertical on a level concrete floor, bike seems stable, but no wind, sudden movements or jumping humans or animals
