In the year 1955!

My Father in Law sent me these quotes, who knows where he got them, but I think they're...
...not funny, rather prophetic...  Roll Eyes

I’ll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are,
it’s going to be impossible to buy a week’s groceries for $10.00.

Have you seen the new cars coming out next year?
It won’t be long before $2,000.00 will only buy a used one.

If cigarettes keep going up in price, I’m going to quit;
20 cents a pack is ridiculous.

Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging 7 cents just to mail a letter.

If they raise the minimum wage to $1.00,
nobody will be able to hire outside help at the store.

When I first started driving, who would have thought gas would someday cost 25 cents a gallon.
Guess we’d be better off leaving the car in the garage.

I’m afraid to send my kids to the movies any more.
Ever since they let Clark Gable get by with saying
D4MN in GONE WITH THE WIND,
it seems every new movie has either HELL or D4MN in it.

I read the other day where some scientist thinks it’s possible to put a man on the moon by the end of the century.
They even have some fellows they call
astronauts preparing for it down in Texas .

Did you see where some baseball player just signed a contract for $50,000 a year just to play ball?
It wouldn’t surprise me if someday they’ll be making more than the President.

I never thought I’d see the day all our kitchen appliances would be electric.
They're even making electric typewriters now.

It’s too bad things are so tough nowadays.
I see where a few married women are having to work to make ends meet.
It won’t be long before young couples are going to have to hire someone to watch their kids so they can both work.

I’m afraid the Volkswagen car is going to open the door to a
whole lot of foreign business.

Thank goodness I won’t live to see the day when the Government
takes half our income in taxes.
I sometimes wonder if we are electing the best people to
government.

The fast food restaurant is convenient for a quick meal,
but I seriously doubt they will ever catch on.

There is no sense going on short trips anymore for a weekend.
It costs nearly $2.00 a night to stay in a hotel.

No one can afford to be sick anymore.
At $15.00 a day in the hospital, it’s too rich for my blood.

If they think I’ll pay 30 cents for a haircut, forget it.

Actually, some of these sound more like it's 1965, not 55, still... good ol'days...  Cool

The missing part is the average wage at the time. I usually like to compare how many hours a person has to work to pay for some item. That comparison hasn't changed nearly as much.

It's funny.... I was just thinking about that this morning. In 1950 my dad was making $25 a week. He bought a brand new house for $7000. Bread cost 17 cents a loaf.  in 1953 he bought his first car- a '35 Dodge. He paid $35 for it. My mother never had to work. In 1958 he bought a cottage and two lots for $2300. In 1974 he bought a brand new Volvo wagon for $9000. now a loaf of bread costs $2.50 - $3.00.

1969 my Dad was making $225/month. House payment was either $30 or $60 a month. Drove a paid for 1968 Satellite with a 6 pack V8 (courtesy of being rear ended in his 67 289 Hi-Po Mustang by a drunk in a Cadillac doing 60 mph into a traffic jam), had his Dad's old (1949)  truck (now my old truck) available as back up or to get firewood...

Heh.
That's how I currently, and for the past 8 or so years, have justified purchases. Even purchasing vs the time to make something for myself.
I see if I will get X amount of hours or use out of something or if it takes less time to buy it than it would to make it and compare that to my wage. It helps me sleep at night.

I hope this is kinda' on subject. I have an antique store nearby that has a huge, unheated, dusty room filled with Life, Progressive Farmer, Saturday Evening Post, etc. They are anywhere from $5-10 and I sometimes buy one for a birthday present. With enough digging I can usually come up with one in the right year and month. Ocassionally I find a Life mag from the same week they were born. It's a hoot to see the cigarettes doctor's recommend most and the prices of luxury and muscle cars. And their kids love seeing the clothes and communication devices from the "old days".  Smiley

I missed most of 1955 as I was born on December 23rd...only around for the last 6 days of that year!

My parents bought a 36 acre farm with a house, barn, wagon shed, corn crib and the dog for $ 12,500.....and they got a 20 year mortgage to pay for it.
