Gas Leaking into air filter

I have been getting the bike ready for the spring and have a problem. The bike starts just fine and runs for about 5-10 minutes before I start to smell gass and then see dripping fuel come out from the drip hose which is connected to the bottom of the air filter housing. After turning off the bike, opening up access to the air filter I can see that it is drenched in fuel. Obviously not a good condition. Any ideas what is going on here or How I go about fixing this? Bike has 8K miles on it and has no real work done other than oil filter changes. Do I need a new Carb? Please help, Thanks, Tom

(it could be the petcock leaking)(very common on this bike)... Test your Petcock,.. don't just turn it to Prime.. If it ain't that,... then your float is stuck, or the float needle is is not seating... You don't need a new carb... (just maybe a new float needle $7)...

California Gender:	Re: Gas Leaking into air filter Reply #3 - 03/10/13 at 11:50:48 At low rpm's, it's not uncommon for the carb to spit out some gas. check your idle speed, and your valve adjustment. and if your filter was totally drenched, you might consider a new one, some say it closes up the pores

The Filter was totally soaked so it lt looks like I will Have to change that as well. Thanks. You have given Me some good things to check out.

If the filter was soaked in gasoline, pretty much all of it will evaporate off in a day or so if the filter is just left in the sun. It shouldn't cause problems. My brother had his filter get oil-soaked due to overfilling the oil. The dealership didn't have one in stock, and advised him just to wash his oily filter off with gas and let it dry. Worked fine. But you will need to find out WHY it got soaked in gas.

Eschew obfuscation.
