Bike has trouble keeping running on idle
02/23/13 at 14:18:56
Ok so I am having a small problem wiht my 06 s40. I dont ride daily currently due to the weather but do about once a week ride. I have noticed over the last few weeks that my bike will start up fine and for the first 5-10 minutes run fine. After this I notice that when down shifting and sitting at a light or stop sign, or if I put the bike in neutral it sputters and dies. It will restart but I have to give it some gas. It's like I have to throttle constantly to keep the engine alive. I have adjusted the idle speed slightly increasing it and this has improved the problem but it still without question has the issue once the bike is warm. It's a struggle sometimes at a light to keep it running as I have to rev it up constantly to keep the engine turning.
I have no clue what this is and didnt find anything searching so if anybody might have an idea what this is any help is appreciated.

Test your Petcock,.. don't just turn it to Prime..
Always check the pet first,..with any fuel problem...
...
..if not that,... I'd look for a gummed up pilot jet, or sticky slide...
... also,.. how old is the gas?... could be water in the gas...

Serow, that's 4 things all in one sentence. And to a newbie, that's quite confusing as he doesn't know which is which and which comes first.
Which one (1) thing should he check first to eliminate the most possibilities?
Then
let the poor boy have a chance to do it
before everyone buries him in this's and that's.
(sure sounds like a petcock starving him once he gets rolling, don't it?)
====================
Jeff, when you get your vac line all plugged off both ways and you start running in Prime all the time as per the petcock test -- then please remember to LEAVE IT THAT WAY while you do any subsequent required testing.
Folks forget and put their vac petcock back into play and screw up the next few tests by doing that.

How long has it been since you fueled up? It could be as simple as condensation in the fuel tank, especially if the fuel was E10 blend. It happenened to me this winter.

Well I last fueled up about three weeks ago. I use non ethanol gas so I assumed that it wasnt a problem with the gas.
I will have to try to test the petcock and hopefully that will be it, I really dont wanna get into carb adjustments yet as I am not confident with them.

If your petcock is okay, gas is okay, and you are timid about taking the carb apart (as I was, too), you might look at where the idle mix screw is set. I had similar symptoms when I was running with a too-rich pilot circuit. How many turns out is your idle mix screw? Is the jetting stock or has someone modified it at some point?

I just had the same problem with mine. Idle got sloppy rich, engine slowed down, sometimes died, sometimes didn't. Could twist the throttle and keep it running. Turned out to be a bad petcock leaking a small amount of fuel through the vacuum line.
Thanks to all the advice on here recommending to check the petcock in the even of anything resembling a fuel delivery problem, I knew right where to look.
