Engine runs very hot
02/21/13 at 13:28:03

Hello all , Ive recently rebuilt my savage engine and put new rings in and refreshed the head all was ok and everything is fine the bike starts easily but it runs very hot . I havent done any distance as yet as I am still sorting the electrics , but I dare not run the engine for very long in case I burn the valves . I have not modified the engine or carb but I have a cone filter on and a megaphone exhaust . Any advice would be gratefully accepted,   Smiley

10-15 minutes in the same spot it's gonna be hot.

and you've changed the intake and exhaust... it's not running real lean... it's gonna be hot.

header turning blue yet?

Idling, hot is normal.
If it is idling good, rejetting is not going to change the idling heat. I mean, if it was a lean condition while idling, it wouldn't idle,.....right ??
If the piston is too big, it would seize in the cylinder before causing a heat problem.
If the rings were too tight, they too would seize in the cylinder before causing a heat problem.

If it is running good, and not noisy, most likely it is not running hotter than normal,.......you just think it is !

thanks for the thoughts the engine runs fine but the carburation could well need rejetting I will check the plug tomorrow . The engine itself does not get very hot but the exhaust is extremely hot after a few minutes if I touch it with a piece of paper it starts to smoulder straight away. The exhaust needs rechroming but untill I get this sorted it would be a waste of time . Could anyone give me a setting for the airscrew ?

Robert,   your Savage is intended to be air cooled by moving through the air at speeds of over 10mph.

You can't judge anything for much about "overheating" when sitting still.

We don't recommend letting the engine idle more than 3-5 minutes at a stop light without shutting it off and restarting it.

ALL of the cases of thermal abuse we have ever had were involved with people leaving the bike idling while they went in the house, etc.

So, what folks have been telling you is sorta like this ......

Don't do dat !!
