I don't care for saddlebags and removed them, they had no supports and it looked like they had been on for several years. The bike suffered no damage from the bags, so I guess the supports are optional.

I would say it all depends on how well you secure the bags without any support brackets. I had mine on without support and they probably would have been fine, but I decided to make the brackets for the added piece of mind. I didn't want to be going down the highway when the bag caught my tire and caused a blow out or something. in a car it is just the cost of replacing a tire. On a motorcycle it can be serious.

They aren't necessary, but it only takes once to show you why the manufacturers want you to run them.
