Homegrown Exhaust Question
02/20/13 at 16:22:15
I had been toying with the idea of replacing that big 4 inch tube Suzuki put on as a muffler with a home made straight/drag pipe and turn down tip. This will be a total homegrown operation using a 1-7/8 X 18 inch exh. pipe and turn down from the auto parts store.
A concocted plan for getting the back pressure is to pack the exh. pipe with steel wool scrubbing pads to create the resistance of the flow, a baffle insert is out of the question.
My question is about BACK PRESSURE and HOW MUCH is needed not to burn the valves out?

7.... an amount of 7...
...
...you can't just stuff packing in the tube, you know?... You need a baffle chamber in the pipe...
Just stuffing a pipe with steel wool,.. will either make the bike not start, or it will turn the pipe into a flaming wool cannon...
...
So,... the baffle is back in the question... you need one...

Gotta agree with Sero and JOG....without baffling of some type the steel wool will blow out, hopefully not flaming as it hits the State Police cruiser right behind you! Yep! That's right. I witnessed that several years ago when a buddy tried that fix.
As cheap as you can get the Hurley Dyna-flow muffs (brand new take-offs many times!)from shops that do the Screaming Eagle conversions it's the only way to go.

Contrary to popular belief, exhaust gas does not go though the stainless matting in an exhaust. The matting is contained between the exterior shell and a perforated inner pipe. The exhaust flows through the perforated inner pipe and the matting absorbs sound waves.

These are not "Home grown" but they are darned cheap for what you get. If the smallest one is only 9" and it's $13...

You'll need something to give you the correct backpressure for sure.
Not sure if you read Kalifornia John's post, but someone there suggested googling "lollipop exhaust" That's another functional, home made way to get the same results...

You know I've been running a dyna exhaust with no baffle all last season no problems. If you think about it hows it any different from a 4 stroke dirt bike with aftermarket or even stock exhaust with no baffle. I would say running a baffle or not is all how you want to tune your engine for which band of power it will run better but not running one isnt going to hurt anything.

I agree MM but Denny was talking about using only straight exhaust tubing and trying to baffle it with steel wool. That's where his problems will begin. Has to be a controlled flow of exhaust gas to work.
