This page has a few really good videos, the second and fourth ones are pretty interesting, showing the results of the shock wave.

I can't see the videos here at work. Everyone on facebook is talking about it.
How did people get hurt? Did we not know it was coming?

in Russia, we have already answered so: Chelyabinsk residents are so harsh that, instead of the alarm clock
they have the shock wave...
"the Alien ship for landing, seeing Chelyabinsk, chose to explode"
"Just yesterday in the Europa League won just three of the Russian club, than was violated by the cosmological balance of the planet"
"Nothing so inspiring, as in the morning meteorite"
"thanks to Putin to the earth flew a small part of the meteorite, the rest on the road sawed"" Grin

Wambr, is it true that there are some in Russia who have said it was an American weapons test?

In 1904 my great grandfather and his brother saw one fall and followed it to it's landing site. It broke into two pieces in the air and a chip broke off on impact. They gave the largest piece to the University of Western Ont, and kept a piece about 8" in diameter, and the chip that broke off. I remember playing with them as a child. They were ordinary chondrite.

I would love to ask an astrophysicist, but I only have the Café to ask, you brace up guys, here's the Nobel-prize winning question :

Meteorites are... rocks, whth this and that frozen inside them.

In August we are all out there with our noses in the air to see "shooting starts" and "falling stars" as earth whizzes through an area thick with small meteors.

All we see at night are ... shooting stars, i.e. burning pindots with a trail of sparks.
During the day the larger ones should still be visible, and sometimes the careful observer
(schoolage children and their granddads, as everybody else is at work)
will see a streak of yellow/orange in the blue sky.

NOW, WHAT DID WE SEE ? STEAM ? VAPORS ? TONS OF VAPORS ?

Sorry, folks, it doesn't add up.

I don't believe the "American weapon" thing, simply because American weapons can't fly that high.

Virgin Spaceliners can... chinese ricers will... Australian corco'wrestlers might, given the proper fuel  Grin

But frankly, given Pres. Putin's furious reaction
"With all the high technology we have, why didn't you see it coming ahead of time?"
means to me... it could have been spotted ahead of time.

Now, we're talking of a rock the size of a schoolbus, with ZERO radio emissions, so radar etc cannot track it.

So, what could be tracked the size of a schoolbus? Anything with radio emissions, be it a satellite gone haywire
(and we KNOW where they ALL are, from the very first one including all those switched off) or... be it...

Houston, YOU have a problem...  Wink

Actually a meteor is a meteor 'till it hits the ground- then it becomes a meteorite. Wink

Radar doesnt need emissions to track. YOu got lied to on 9/11.
If that were true, then we wouldnt need to spend Big $$$ on Radar Avoidance Technology for the Air Force. All theyd have to do it Turn off the Radio!
( That such basic understandings must be explained causes me to be unable to accept the observations others provide & DEFEND)
Radar biunces high frequency waves off of things & measures the time from transmission to reflected reception to determine location, cvourse, size & speed. A school bus sized rock has a Wonderful radar profile.

In space the rock is called a meteroid (or asteroid if large enough)

In Earth's atmosphere, said rock is called a meteor

On Earth's surface flying space rock is known as a meteorite

Amazing cosmic co-inky-dink that on the same day that our Blue Marble gets a close shave from a 144,000 ton asteroid, it gets a nick from a 10 ton rock over Russia!
