spark plug wrench

can someone please confirm the size of the savage spark plug for me?  will an 18 mm wrench fit?  i have a long 18 mm thin-walled spark plug socket, which fits the spare plug i got from the prior owner, but i'll be darned if i can get it onto the installed plug.

for one thing, there's a brass button thing that keeps the socket from lining up properly with the plug, but maybe my wrench is also the wrong size?

Yep, mines an 18mm.  If the brass button thing is on the end of the plug it's for a different style of plug cap retainer.  Some are made  of aluminum too.  It should unscrew so the stock cap can grip on the threads.

thanks v.

the brass thingy actually is part of the valve cover, and i will try a shorter 18 mm socket.

Hey runrun, if this is what you mean, it's one of the rocker shafts.  It should only stick out about 3mm.  As you can see, mine's all apart.  The Zook tool has a bit of a taper on it, also has a rubber insert to hold the plug...probably done like that just for this reason Undecided

There are other plugs with different hex sizes that screw right in. I've run stock NGKs, NDs (different hex), Champion (5/8 and 13/16 hex), Bosch (oddball hex)... and if it somehow got a small engine plug swapped in it will be a 14mm hex (outboard, lawnmower, chainsaw, etc plugs WILL fit the Savage).

D series NGK plugs swap with a ton of other sizes. Good for availability, not so good if you weren't the one who swapped the plug last (or you did and forgot what you put in).
