Chirping....
02/11/13 at 18:47:01

I ride my bike almost everyday here in the Pacific Northwest, and as you know, we get a lot of rain....it sets outside at work too, in the rain. It just turned 3000 on it and I have started to notice a chirping sound when I fire it up from sitting (cold). I haven't done the lubing yet, or changed the air filter, I know I should soon. Any idea as to this noise, where I might look, it seems to be a "pulley" type noise while I'm sitting still. Sorry I'm so vague, but there is so much wisdom here I thought it worth a chance....THANKS!

Well, we've done these cold bike chirping noises with nothing rolling or revving (non-belt, non-engine noise) before and the very best (funniest) of the lot had to be the Atomic Cricket.

If your noise stops when your pipe gets hot, look to your bracket, mount bolts, header nuts etc before you get the flashlight and start to looking up inside the muffler for the little mutated nuclear cricket what has moved into your muffler to stay warm ....

(broken baffle inside the muffler rubbing while cold, expands when hot and the noise stops)

Cheesy

If you can catch that Atomic Cricket you can sell him on Ebay for thousands of dollars .....

Same here. On my bike, it's the belt. Didn't happen on dry days, but as soon as the dew started to settle it would chirp in the morning.

Belt chirp, only happens when the bike is rolling...
I'm guessing it's the speedo mount bezel,.. or the headlight ring...
When you hear it,... touch/press/jiggle those...
Wink...

If the chirp sounds like a loose or rattly ball bearing it could be the speedo, put your hand on it while riding and this will prove it one way or the other. The fix is on page 3 of the tech section, post 2.

He said this noise happens when he is sitting still.....with the engine running and the engine cold.

THe belt would not make the noise when he is not moving.  If the noise goes away when the enigne is warm....not sure why it would go away if it was a headlight or speedo rattle...but they are worth checking.  It could be the gasket at the header to cylinder leaking, see if the bolts are snug but don't overtighten them.  As OF stated, it could be something in the muffler is loose.  Can you give us an idea what direction the chirp is coming from?

Book says Tighten header bolts when its cold. Dont wanna tighten them hot then watch them get shorter when they cool, I guess is their thinking,,
Much better to have to snug them every few months than fix a busted one, ever. I use a 1/4" ratchet with thumb on the head & open fingers being closed to tighten it. No arm, just fingers. I can feel it come tight that way. Thems some way skinny little things.

I have the same chirp.  Almost sounds like the old Volkswagen beetles.  The search continues!
