sportster  muffler questiion

I decided to try the sportster muffler mod.  A friend brought over a 98 stock sportster muffler as well as a Krome Werks slipon.  I have read where people say the stock sportster fits right on.  Not for me.  It did not line up with the muffler bracket.  Perhaps you are supposed to bend the bracket.  I did not want to do that.  So I tried the Krome Werks.  It lined up perfectly against the muffler bracket.  A stainless hose clamp holds it securely!  Why the difference?  The stock sportster muffler has a 3" diameter body.  The Krome Werks has a 21/2" body.  And I believe there are other slipon mufflers for the sportster (like cycle shack I think) that have a 21/2" diameter body.  Has any one else noticed this?

Serowbot was kind enough to post muffler pics in MUFFLER section Of Tech. I used a muffler that fits The Low and Night Train. HARFXS1584 Part number 65842-07. Slips on, one mounting point on stock bracket, used old clamp, bought JC Whitney Heat shield to cover ugly joint, helmet to cover ugly rider.  Smiley Took less than an hour.

Yes, the job is so simple for some,..........many of which don't tell the last 1/2 of the story,........that includes giving up, and welding it on,....but never admit it.

Or do like my bro does,.....says, "a little leaking never hurt anything"

the stainless steel hose clamp was used to hold the muffler against the stock muffler bracket.  Using the *wiggle test" it is  as
secure as the stock setup.  The muffler is attached to the header pipe with a harley type muffler clamp.

When I had my Thrush muffler I used a hose clamp to attach it to the factory muffler bracket. It worked well for many miles until I change the exhaust for the 1000th time.
