I went up to the first "Hotter"{ cam. Offers a bit more duration. Got some of that OOmph you refer to, Id say about = to the gain from the Supertrapp & 14 disks & bigger main jet. I cant see any change in the engines potential life from that. An overbore? I dont see that as necessarily being a life shortening thing,,,I suppose it would necessarily increase the load on the main bearings at Wide Open acceleration, which is Why people do these things, to enjoy that acceleration, so, yea, it could take some years off of the life of one, IF we compare it to a stocker that gets treated gently or even a bone stock engine that gets the same number of Wide Open acceleration events. Everything is a trade. But I dont see these mods as "Instant Death". Theyll run for years, IMO, even if ya thrash them coming out of corners & leaving the line, as long as ya dont over rev them & keep them in a healthy oil. Theyre not a high RPM engine, theyre built for torque. They pull away from a stop nicely & step on out of a corner pretty well, but theyre not gonna get a guy in trouble by hitting a power band & wheelying out from under ya or causing a high side crash.
The Verslavy isnt a performance mod & wont affect engine life at all, except to keep ya safe from dropping the tensioner guts into the engines gears & guts & destroying it. It will make the cam chain last longer. You will, however, get more cam timing retardation by running the chain more miles. The change in performance hasnt been studied nor has it been anything anyone has observed as even being noticeable. It would be interesting to take an engine that has a Verslavy that has been in use long enough to Have to change the chain, dyno it, put a new chain in & dyno again.,
