Front brake pads installation help
01/25/13 at 13:57:13

Hello,

I bought a 1999 Savage in October. Have been reading the forum since then (and was trying to register since then without any luck until now).

The first project I took on was the replacement of front brake pads using the helpful hints in several threads over here. I used the EBC Organic Kevlar Brake Pads FA106 and followed all the steps and hints but must have missed something because even though the brakes are working fine, the rotor is rubbing against the caliper on the piston side.

Will appreciate if you guys can help and tell me how to fix this (and what I did wrong).

As this maybe an installation issue, a picture will help.

Also note that there's a ATV version of the pad that's thicker

If that's what you got, maybe the problem.

And the solution could be to grind the pads a bit thinner.

Rotor is rubbing agains the caliper.  Dunno, but did you get the spacers back in right?  The one that is slightly longer goes on the caliper side of the axle.  On mine the rotor will rub about half-way from the center out if the spacers are reversed.

Thanks everyone for responding so quickly.

I didn't realized there was an ATV version. The new pads are much thicker than the old ones but I figured that's because they are new while the stock ones had 4200 miles on them.
This is the one I got http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GRZEZI. The review said that someone used it on the S40 so I thought it might be the same.

I did not take the wheel off so I assume the spacers are in the right order but will double-check.

PS. As soon as I can figure out how to upload a picture I will do that. The picture is already on bikepics.com but the img, /img  tags for some reason aren't working.

That's what I did in my last message but it only shows the icon not the actual image.

The spacers for the wheel are on the wrong side. The ones on the axle.

Based on the group's suggestion that it has to be the spacers, I took a chance and swap the two spacers. And, what do you know, that was the problem and the rotor does not rub against the caliper anymore.

Thanks to everyone who gave me ideas and especially Versy, Steve H and Cavi Mike for nudging me in the right direction.
