Lowering the Front Forks

After reading this post on how to lower forks,
http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1289315334
I want to know what benefits are there from doing this mod? Is it for cosmetic reasons or does it improve handling?

One reason to lower forks if for appearance - it softens the cruiser styling and makes it look more old school for Bobber conversions.
A second reason is for the Cafe style bikes. By lowering the forks and installing taller rear shocks the fork angle (rake) is reduced, and theoretically the steering is a bit faster.
