1987 savage just under 10,000 miles battery about 5 months old. 2 weeks ago i rode for a good 35 miles shut my bike down it sat for 3 hours i went to start it and she wouldnt start. sounded like a dying battery so i removed it, topped off the water levels and threw it on a charger for the night. battery back in, i went to start it and made the same sluggish sound . thought the starter was bad to i took it to a starter and alternator specialist and tested it everything was good. now we are thinking the starter clutch. took the left crank case off to expose the the alternator and stater and they both looked like they were in great shape. checked the teeth on the starter idle gears and the starter driven gear, all normal wear and tear. the starter gear would spin without spinning the alternator so i tightened the allen bolts securing the bracket to the starter driven gear thinking i solved the problem put everything back together with some fresh oil to finish it off, go to start it still sluggish and wont turn over. it will get one revolution through when you hold the starter down for about 6 sec.

Have you actually had the battery tested.  Even new batteries can go bad.  Also check all your connections in your start circuit,  not just check to see if tight, but remove clean then re-attach.

I would get the battery checked first. I have a 2011 S40 that is only 8 month old and the battery went bad last week.

I could charge it up and two revolutions of the engine would bring it down. I charged it up and left it on my work bench and it would loose 60% of its charge in 24 hours just setting there.

I have a new Yuasa YTX14AHL-BS AGM battery coming. The battery that came in it was a Bikemaster BB14L-B2 liquid acid battery that was made in China. It didn't last that long.

That's allot of work to do without even having tested the battery to make sure it's good
