Engine noise, what's normal?
12/28/12 at 09:45:11
I'm not new to bikes but have just got my first Savage and I love everything about it, particularly the fact that it looks relatively easy to work on. It is a low miler and has been fairly dormant for that last 10 years only racking up about 5k during this time. It does have a small oil leak from what I assume is the head gasket and possibly as a result of lack of use, it is very minor though and not a problem (I'm used to Brits); however I've also noticed some a light tapping noise that seems to match the engine speed. The bike runs sweet enough but I'm wondering if this is a normal sound for a Savage, or possibly is an issue that needs sorting. I will be checking the valve clearances as soon as the weather improves here in blighty (no shed or garage unfortunately). Any info' would be very much appreciated.

Check your cam chain tensioner. Loose cam chain are common culprits.

Thanks for the reply.
Yea I did think about that but it doesn't sound like the cam chain is about to give way, more of a very light tapping noise. I would love to hear another Savage to gauge what might be considered normal.

Book calls for valve adjustment at 5,000 miles.
The leak isnt the head gasket, bet on that. Its a common issue, tho usually only after someone has gone in to retorque the head & followed the books "No Pooky" on the plug. If ya go in there, ask for clues,
A gentle touch with the stock bolts. Some replace them with good stuff, Ive got stock in, 20,000 miles, never torqued the head, never had a leak except the O-ring at the clutch arm/case. A 90* offset screwdriver to hold the adjuster while ya set the jam nut makes runnin the valves so much easier..
