Aftermarket 2010 S40 Speedometer
12/22/12 at 10:57:58

Hey everyone,
The wife has been asking about adding a aftermarket speedometer (either digital or analogue) to her S40 handlebars. While we're driving she can't look down and see her gauge on the tank because her tank bag is in the way, and she hates to have to take her eyes off the road.

I've done a quick search on the web, but thought I'd ask the experts instead of searching for days.

1. I've heard of Vapor digital gauges, but they only list stuff specifically for ATV's and offroaders. Will they work on her bike?

2. Are there any other manufacturers that make analogue gauges with KMH faces.? We're in Canada.

3. Are these aftermarkets easy to install.

Thanks a heap for any help you can provide.

Dave

I put a tach on mine and use it as a speedo. After a while you get to know how fast you are going at specific rpm's. I really don't like digital speedo's because I think they are harder to read  than analogue (dial).

Cheap GPS from the local truck stop. No moving parts to break. More accurate than an analog speedometer. $10 mount and $40 unit (US dollars).

Bicycle speedometer. $20 and 20 minutes to install it.

Do like I do, bike with a functional speedometer sets the pace until you learn to "feel" the speed per sound in every gear. I haven't had a functional speedometer on my Savage in years. Tank swap in 2005 or 2006.

The trail tech vapors are pretty easy to install, as its just magnets and sensor mounted on the hub of the front wheel. Select the raptor 700 kit as it has the tach wire neccessary to get correct tach readings. So you can have a tach and speedo in one.

I tried bike speedos and found them to be completely useless as they won't stay lit for late evening/night riding, which is when I go to and from work.

Check the Paul Marshall posts in RSD, he has just installed a Vapor Trail and seems quite happy with it. He is in NZ and we are in kms as well. He had to be careful installing the rev counter sensor.

I fitted the Vector and its been great. I checked its accuracy with a GPS and it was on the money. I did have issues fitting the heat sensor which replaces the spark plug washer, I moded mine but you dont really need to know engine temp. Its a fun gimmick though. You can mount the sensor onto a head bolt which will give you a head temp. Thats fun too. The Vector does not have a rev counter funtion,Not sure about Vapor.
This is my post about the Vector. http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1355124965

This is the unit I have. Really like it. The fake fuel gauge works great. Lots of ways it can be setup.

I like my Sigma Bike Computer.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003BCG9EK/ref=asc_df_B003BCG9EK2205876?smid=ATVPDKI...

Serves both as the trip-o-meter and as a speedometer.  I have it mounted in the middle of my handle bars.  Much easier to see than the speedometer on the tank.

Here is a good install tutorial
