hesitation in 1st
12/19/12 at 16:04:58

I just got this Savage, and all seems good, except for a slight hesitation in 1st. At least i notice it most when pulling away from a stop. Seems to run fine at higher speeds. And at Idle is smooth. I notice that it runs better with the choke on a little.
Anyway, Vacuum leak? Dirty Carb?
5K miles

Thanks
John

What year is the bike?  Has it been re-jetted that you know of?  How cold is it outside when this happens?  Does it happen all the time, or just the first mile or two?

03, I have only put about 3 miles on it. Its cold hear in Rhode Island. Seemed worse when it was cold. Of course it ran fine when i tested it. I only drove around a parking lot. The bike is cosmetically almost perfect.
Starts right away.
Maybe I should just wait till spring and check it out then.

A parking lot? You gotta at least get the engine warm before we can start diagnosing problems especially considering the problem is most likely a cold engine.

Yup,.. it's just the cold...  not time to correct anything,...
Wait 'till it's warm enough for good 20 mile ride... Wink...

Or, if you're as nuts as I am, take a 20 mile ride at 15 degrees! Shocked
After the first 15 miles, you can tell if there's really a problem. Grin

Had the same on my new aquisition ('06).
I've only been on here a few months and have seen this symptom come up a bunch of times. It's the stupid arse EPA spacer (just a plastic washer that essentially chokes off the fuel supply) that they stick in making the bike run lean and more green, yet more lame.
When I bought my bike the previous owner was quite keen on leaving the choke on to "warm it up thoroughly", he knew it didn't run perfect without choke. I didn't care as I knew the solution was on this forum.
solution - take out the extra spacer in the carb and put in a thinner nylon washer - look at help pages on here for how, bit fiddly but I'm a monkey and I did it. Now I have no more hesitations or having to leave the choke on.

Do the mod - you won't regret it.
