Texas License Plate Laws

Does anyone here live in Texas and have a sort of clear understanding of the law on how to place your license plate. Will it be possible to place it like this?

Houston count? Smiley

No...  First, it is not lit.  Also, it is partially obstructed.  Sideways can be an issue if the cop is a jerk, but will generally be dismissed in court.  But the lighting will not...  Same spot, but horizontal with a light under the fender might be OK.

Note that you WILL get hassled if it gets muddy.

Houston is right TX laws says it must be visible(no obstructions) from the rear and you have to have at least 1 white light illuminating it at night.

Dealing with issues about that now.. Harris sheriffs and hpd haven't given me a problem, but DPS sure hates it.

And if you use a license plate frame, it must not obscure any part of the word Texas on the plate. Got pulled over & warned for that by DPS officer a couple of years ago. Goes for any Texas plate. Cool

The Law:  http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.us/Docs/TN/htm/TN.547.htm http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.us/Docs/TN/htm/TN.504.htm#504.002

Sec. 547.322. ... a white light thatSad1)  illuminates the rear license plate;  and(2)  makes the plate clearly legible at a distance of 50 feet from the rear.

Sec. 504.010.  ... The board may adopt rules regarding the placement of license plates for a motor vehicle, road tractor, motorcycle, trailer, or semitrailer.
...
Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a vehicle issued license plates under Subsection (a) shall be required to attach and display only one license plate on the rear of the vehicle....

Basicly:  "clearly legible" means if a cop doesn't want to look it sideways, your plate is illegal.  "Rear at the vehicle" generally means at the rear end of the vehicle, behind the wheels or as far rearward you can mount.

You will please note that the motorcycle at the site you cite has several pictures of the plate tucked under the sear, and one with the plate at the rear and horizonal.  I thunk he got pulled over.

I got a ticket for having my plate mounted vertically out here in CA, on vets day... The officer didn't care about my no fenders, no mirrors, or the fact that I'm a vet! but I guess having the plate mounted sideways was his petpeve.
