Cheap Engine?

The Cafe may be a better place for this but since it's mechanical I figured I'd put it here.

There is a bunch of work that I'd like to do to my Savage. Long term sort of stuff. Unfortunately, my savage is my primary mode of transportation. Most of the time that's a good thing, but it means that I can't have the bike of the road for more than a weekend.

So the logical solution to this problem is to get an additional bike.  Grin

Since I'm on a budget I started kicking around the idea of building a small bike 200cc-250cc that I can use when I have Nessy pulled apart and then give to my son later. I'd really like to stick with a thumper since they're so much easier to work with.

Anyone have a suggestion on where I can find an engine to build a bike around?

Why build a bike around an engine when you can get the whole thing?

And if you're getting a second engine so you can work on it while the other provides the basic transportation... why not a second savage engine?

This would be the cheaper option as there'd be no reg/insurance costs.  Still would take a couple days to swap out though.

It's nothing
personal; the other
one came first.

+1 to this.  Lots of guys in my other forum do just this with their primary mode of transportation.  Get yourself an extra engine and work on it as much as you want.  Nothing easier.   Wink

"You ride a single cylinder motorcycle??"

"When you're good, one is all you need." Wink

I guess that means I'm no good anymore; I've got 4 more cylinders! '08 Yamaha FJR1300 and still '01 Savage

I want to change the front end out. Possibly see if I can figure out a way to put a disc brake on the back. Not really projects that will allow me to just swap engines.  Sad

I thought about using a savage engine, but all the ones that I can find are fairly pricey.

I would rate those projects as something last way more than a weekend.

find a parts bike (no title) and work the mods out 1st.

Up here a non-working savage can go for over a grand. I was hoping to spend less than that on mods, nevermind what I'm puttering around on while doing them.
