2) Clean the engine throughly.  I recommend a few cans of break and parts cleaner.  That thing is a mess, and there is no way to tell where the leak is coming from......

Yep, and after everything is clean, spritz a bit of Desenex foot spray onto the area(s) you suspect of leaking oil.  Go for a short toot.  Then, check the areas you sprayed.  If any of the white foot powder spray has turned brown/black, you've found an oil leak.....

Happy hunting!

Do you have a reason to believe that either the carb or the petcock was giving you any trouble ?

I agree with Houston. I was tickled with my bike just like you, but I just checked the tires, changed the oil and ran a few hundred miles in familiar territory for a shake down cruise. I use the Hi Flo Filtro air filter--about half the price of Suzuki filter here. Part Number HMFA3608 direct fit less than $20 US. I don't have a lot to add. I just think it's cool to talk to people in Australia. I am sorta like James Garner in the movie "Support Your Local Sherrif". He kept saying he didn't intend to keep the job--just long enough to get enough money to go to Australia. I hope you enjoy your bike as much as I have.  Smiley

Thanks Guys,

well the oil was like sludge that came out, and had way too much in there!

there was no washer on the drain plug or the oil filter

new washers are in, new oil (correct amount) is in with a new filter.

Air box had a little staining on the bottom of the filter but nothing major. I've ordered a new filter as it's a bit of a mess.

degreased everything.  Doesn't seem to be any leaks so far !!!

Major issue - I can't register the bike with the aftermarket exhaust it has. It's come from interstate and the check is very strict. I have no idea where to get a stock Savage muffler from. They are quite a rare bike in Aus. Anyone have any ideas if another model's can will fit on?

Looks like your stuck mate, don't think there's anything exactly like it if you have to have a stock muffler.

the question would be, would they except a stock harley muff on it?

If you're over a barrel, I have a couple in case the epa goes nazi.
I can always pick up another.  PM me if you want one and I'll look up a shipping price (gonna be steep)

Hey mate,
I can't PM as of yet Smiley

Wouldn't mind seeing how much it'll cost to get one sent over... could possibly be my only option!.

Moments like these make me realise I am living on an island in the middle of nowhere, hehe.

My postcode is 2028 (Double Bay, NSW, Australia)

About $75 for shipping

about $50 for the muff, I'll include the heat shield and see if I have a serviceable clamp.

Check if you can upgrade to a newer stock replacement.  In that case, a new Dayna with a cat in it will meet or exceed all factory requirements.  Usually, that is all they are looking for.

Many thanks David I have sent you a PM.

Hopefully the Rego check goes ahead this week! Little squirts up and down the street have been a big tease hehe. Have a few weeks off work so I hope to get stuck into some work on the bike and some nice rides.
