Team,

My 99 bobber has 6000 miles on it. I do not ride her much as I have several other bikes and just finished up a sweet 73 RD350 cafe racer.

Anyway I have 2 questions to ask:

1) over the last year, the bike makes a loud pop when the engin is shut off most of the time. This is new as it never did that before.

2) Since April, I have taken the bike on the freeway once and awhile and rode her very hard as I simple never ride this bike too much. I am hearing a faint rattle from the front of the bike, usually around 3000 rpm when the bike is rolling. I am not sure if it is from the headlight on chain tensioner. It is not always there, sound comes and goes, not at ia stand still.

Bike is bobbed and made it into the Horse Back Street Chopper magazine.

Engine is running a K&N i factory air box, rumbler pipe, iradium plug, white spacer mode, one main jet richer, one pilot jet size richer, always premiem fuel.

So what are your thoughts. The bike runs perfect and only a trained ear can catch the on/off rattle on the ride but it is new. Likewise that pop, its good night kiss is annoying.

Ideas?

Richie

1.Questions belong in Rubber Side Down, not the Tech section.

2.Unless you've increased compression, why do you need high octane fuel?

I agree with Salb... premium is a waste... we're 8.5 compression...

The noise is likely headlight ring,.. or speedo cable...
Poof, pops on shutdown are common... Think of it as character...
Just blowing off the last morsel of unspent fuel in the pipe...

I love my shutdown poof...  makes me think of a horse, doin' that lip blubber thing, after a good run...
Grin...

run your hand around and grab whatever you think might be making the noise... except don't grab the belt.

if it's the tensioner, you'll feel rapping on the clutch cover, behind the oil filter cover, at the top of the case.

If you grab the belt while driving you might hear a lot more noises than rattling

I have experienced some rattling and tapping sounds recently.  In my case it is a worn Decomp shaft.  You identify this as the rattle is to the left side and touching the Decomp assembly will give you direct feedback to the exhaust valves for the motor.

I just hit 30k,... and my clutch lever has worn enough to vibrate in the mount...
I've been riding around, touching things to find it for weeks at least...
Finally touch the lever, and it stops... Grin...
Either need a thin shim washer,.. or a new lever... Huh...

belt guard has a anti vibration pad(14789-24B12) where it meets the front pully cover.
to test when bike is not running hit the belt guard with the palm of your hand
