that accordion-effect you describe that takes place on most large group Rides is why I gave up participating in 'em ... can be dangerous! I've personally witnessed 2 Bike accidents over the years as a result of that ...  Sad

Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut between the seat and the handlebars. Make sure yours isn't too tight or too loose.

I have only ridden in a large group once and was disappointed to see how many riders did not know to stagger their bikes.

I enjoy participating in the Olympia, Wa Toy Run.
We have done so twice in the last 4 years.
We were in the middle of the group the first time and
the end of the pack the last time.
The riders seemed to stagger themselves and no one
got impatient.
Knowing that your helping children that may not have
a christmas other wise, makes it all worth while.
Weather may again keep us away from it this year,
then again you can make a monetary or toy donation
at a participating facility as well..
So don't let the thought of some riders not riding like
you may like to ride, keep you from helping the unfortunate
kids that will benefit from this as well..Hugs to all, Smileykim

I have ridden in a number of large groups mostly toy runs. The trick to beating the yo yo, is to maintain a steady speed. They will speed up and slow down and you will be right there waiting.

I ride the Miracle Ride for the children's hospital every April.
I get there at 6:30 AM so I'm one of the lead dogs.
If you're about 50 bikes back it starts to turn into chaos with this accordion effect. Also the local news is filming it so all eyes on the camera and none on the road. Pulling out of the parking lot is almost the worst point in the trip.
The worst was riding with Harley guys. They're blubbing along at the bottom of 2nd which was right where I am winding out 2nd or about to stall 3rd (when I rode the Savage).

Aida and I have done rides of up to 2000 people.  The trick is to never speed up too much when it stretches ahead, and to slow down early as you approach.  Also, and at least a few bikes in your group that know what you are doing to stabilize the ride, prevent passing, and enforce lane stagger.

And we love draggin the back to see the pissed off cagers.  Grin
