Can ride a Savage on a learners licence
11/24/12 at 00:21:23

I found it very interesting today that in New Zealand people on a learners licence can now ride a wide range of motor cycles up to a 650 cc. This has only come into efect this October 1st, Prior to that date it was a 250cc limit. There are alot of 250cc motorcycles out there which are very powerful true, but there are a lot of 650cc which are as well.
A maximum power-to-weight ratio of 150 kilowatts per tonne (the power is that specified by the manufacturer and the weight is the weight specified by the manufacturer plus 90kgs for the rider and riding gear); and an upper engine capacity limit of 660cc. are the legal requirements.
I am interested to hear peoples thoughts that someone who has never riden a bike before can ride a Savage and a number of other bikes.

There are two categories of LAMS motorcycles: LAMS-approved and LAMS-prohibited motorcycles. LAMS-approved motorcycles are determined by two factors: • a maximum power-to-weight ratio of 150 kilowatts per tonne (the power is that specified by the manufacturer and the weight is the weight specified by the manufacturer plus 90kgs for the rider and riding gear); and• an upper engine capacity limit of 660cc.Motorcycles and scooters with an engine capacity of 250cc or under will automatically be LAMS-approved, with the exception of a small group of 250cc motorcycles that will not be LAMS-approved for learner and restricted riders after 1 October 2012 due to their high performance capabilities. Learner or restricted licence holders who rode one of these 250cc motorcycles before 1 October 2012 have the option to apply to the NZTA for an exemption, which may enable them to continue to legally ride this motorcycle. Please noteAny motorcycle modified in a way that increases its power-to-weight ratio is no longer LAMS-compliant, regardless of whether it appears on the list. Failure to comply with the new rules may result in fines and demerit points. For more information go to www.nzta.govt.nz/lamsContents• List of approved motorcycles• List of prohibited motorcycles

Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme (LAMS)From 1 October 2012 the following motorcycles are approved for use by Class 6 learner and restricted licence holders.
LAMS-approved motorcycles list (between 251cc and 660cc)
LAMS-approved motorcycles include:• All motorcycles with engine capacities of 250cc and under, except for those on the LAMS-prohibited list above.• Fully electric powered motorcycles with a power-to-weight ratio of 150 kilowatts per tonne and under (this includes all fully electric powered motorcycles registered on New Zealand's Motor Vehicle Register as of 1 June 2012).• All motorcycles manufactured prior to 1960 with an engine capacity of 660cc and under.• The following list of motorcycles with engine capacities between 251cc and 660cc - these motorcycles must be in standard form as produced by the manufacturer. They cannot be modified in any way to increase the power-to-weight ratio. Please note: The following list currently displays the more current models available in the New Zealand market. It will be updated as other models, both old and new, are approved by the NZ Transport Agency. Please ensure you pay close attention the degree of specification in the list - for example, a Suzuki GSX650FU model is specified in the list, therefore is a LAMS-approved motorcycle. A Suzuki GSX650F is not on the list and is therefore not LAMS-approved.
