Wintel reorganizes after Windows 8  &  Surf

http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/why-did-stephen-sinofsky-jump-ship/?src=O...

Microsoft has one completely predictable thing it does when it squats down and lets rip with a big 'ol stinky Vista -- somebody has to take the blame, be the goat and wear the horns.   And it isn't going to be Balmer or Gates, so who is the next most logical person?

What does Steven Sinofsky's abrupt departure from Microsoft mean for Windows…and the way the company will compete with Apple and Google?

Read more: http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/why-did-stephen-sinofsky-jump-ship/#ixzz2...

So, with the evil devil goat all properly cast out of heaven by his  little white poky horns, so what then is Microsoft going to do next?

Intel hasn't pulled the magic "save us all" chip rabbit out of their hat yet so there is no "exclusive x86 super chip" out there in the wings yet to excuse the really poor software package in Win8/WinRT.   It's a flop.

So, you gotta go fix your software.

A clue for you, Microsoft.  Nobody likes the PC interface, dudes.   Service pack it quick and provide an option to go back to a normal looking PC interface.   Make your tablet shite a "chose it" option, in other words, not the default.

Next, fully support ARM chips without making people buy all new software (that doesn't even exist yet).   That was ARROGANT & STUPID for you to do that.

Lastly, you can't be APPLE -- that position is locked down by a company called APPLE who doesn't use Intel x86 chip sets (except in desktop PCs next year and not at all after 2 years) and it does not use your software, at all, period.

Speaking of APPLE, who you say you are better than, APPLE who can run their software on RISC or ARM or x86 right now, no fuss no bother -- so why can't you?

So I had to laugh a little at reading this... the story

My son is 14 years old.. and very into his schools friends. He got a new Nokia with windows.  ALl the kids think is phone is the bomb in looks ... but my son knows the truth.. NO apps!

He and I went out to eat.. and he spent the whole time telling me how his phone is nice.. but he wishes he had gotten an andriod or even an iphone.

So yeah MS.. even my 14yo . has yall figured out!

Next, all you Wintel people have to get a grip upon this fact .... shite is changing right in front of you.    You can't keep asking for $199 for a silly main processor chip any more, you ain't going to get it.

The NUC isn't going to cost $300

The NUC isn't going to come from Wintel at all

The Next Unit of Computing for most casual users is going to be a tablet or a phone, and by golly if it has to be a sit down computer it will likely look like this for about $49.

or this for $89:

Intel .... considering its options now?
Reply #3 - 11/16/12 at 20:29:20

http://www.eetimes.com/electronics-news/4396901/Intel-plans-to-crush-ARM-beyo...

Intel is talking about the future, how it is biding its time until ARM gets below 20 nanometer to "crush them".

Arm suppliers are doing damage to Intel and Microsoft at 40nm, 32mn, 28nm and at 20nm right now, using the left overs from the last 4 waves of innovation.

Intel is in production at 22nm right now and cannot compete with ARM which mostly at 28mn and above right now.   Building for x86 has some built in disadvantages compared to building for RISC, now doesn't it?   If you jumped over to RISC chips, you could kick some serious ass -- WHEN WILL YOU FIGURE THIS OUT, INTEL?

How is going below 20nm magically going to help you?   Yes, you will be there most of a year before APPLE gets there, but APPLE has been very comfy kicking Wintel's butt with a 10-15nm disadvantage for a long time now.   How is letting them get closer going to help you?

Next, listen to the head of Intel Architecture speaking about moving forward into a processor and software that can recognize your voice and your facial features.

Doesn't he realize that phones have been using facial recognition to unlock for the last year or so and both tablets and phones will listen to you and execute your voice commands for the last whole year now?

Dude, you talk some about 48 clusters on a SOC as being a 2 year future goal, did you ever even think that a quad core A-57 will have a cluster count higher than that BY THIS TIME NEXT YEAR when Apple ships the first one?

They keep talkin' about these dinkum computers,.. but once you add a keyboard, mouse, monitor, hard drive, speakers, and a power supply... you still have a jumble of plugs, wires, adapters,...
I'd like to see a fanless, low power consumption, processor... built into a keyboard/touchpad,.. with at least 1 terrabyte storage, and speakers that you actually hear... with one power cord,.. and one monitor cord...
All these wires drive nuts!... and the stupid fans whirring...
... but not a flashdrive size 'puter that needs 6 peripherals to be useful...
... and all for $100...
I'm not askin' for much... Huh...
...(with wi-fi of course)... Huh...

Let's see, take a mini pc and attach it to a powered USB 3.0 hub and plug the PC on a stick into the back of a speaker equipped HDMI monitor (or an old 20"-30" HDMI television if you prefer).  Power from the USB hub runs the PC on a stick running through the USB 3.0 powered connector lines (all part of USB 3.0's normal cables).

Stick PC is now "part of the monitor" as most USB plugs on monitors point down or sideways for this very reason.  So, you have one USB hub sitting on your desk along with one small portable hard drive and the same keyboard and mouse you use now.

That is less stuff than you have now by a whole lot.

(and guess which one needs the most power -- yup, it's the speaker equipped HDMI flatscreen monitor or TV which is plugged into your wall socket)

====================

This is what you can do now, today.   It is no more cables than you have now if you already use a USB hub (and many of us do just to get the connections up where we can use them easily).

Give it a few years and combo units will be available using the same chassis as the keyboard or perhaps the monitor as both have ample free space inside to house the pc on a stick sized hardware.

More stunning will be the smart phones that will do the trick while sitting in your pocket, and by that I mean wirelessly run a monitor, keyboard and mouse.  (1-2 years out)

HP, Acer and other Microsoft Hardware Partners ring in on Win8 and Surface -- the truth comes out

http://blogs.computerworld.com/tablets/21344/hps-pc-boss-microsofts-windows-r...

Undecided

Ummmmm .....  where's that scapegoat of ours again?

We need to bring him (Sinofsky) back so we can hang him up in the air by his little poky horns for our hardware partners to hit on  him with pińata sticks and then they can light a little bonfire up underneath him while he smokes and kicks and squeals and bleats for everybody to show exactly how bad he was and how sorry he is for having done that horrible, terrible job on Win8/Surface.

Acer follows up their somewhat negative comments on Win8 with their Google Play release of a $199 Chromebook with a 250 gigabyte hard drive in it (can run Ubuntu, Mint, etc. on a dual boot once you hack the bootloader as the chip is an Intel Celeron).

Low price of $199 and similar build specs to Acer's Windows laptops indicates just how large the size of the "Microsoft Tax" really is.

(which is avoided by the use of the Chrome OS operating system)

So, you can have Chrome OS and/or your favorite Linux at a net cost of $199, which is pretty nice.   So yeah, things keep on getting better when you get away from Windows8 and Acer can show you the way.

The cost of computing keeps going down.

And how is Google doing this Christmas?

Google Play Store has 5 devices in it now, with the new $199 Acer Chromebook arriving just yesterday.

Right now of the 5 items, two are still sold out through Christmas.

Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 are showing in stock now, which is an improvement.  The Nexus 4 and the Samsung Chromebook are still sold out for the count, which is unchanged.

The original $499 Chromebook no longer shows in the listing (discontinued due to the high price, I suspect)

===================

What information is available on the Holiday Sales numbers so far?

Nexus 7 was selling at roughly a million a week and ASUS couldn't keep up with shipments -- total sales exceed 10 million in the first month of sales.

Nexus 4 is being built by LG and it sold out totally in 4 minutes. Seriously, Walmart and Best Buy and all retailers logged more orders than they had stock allocated to them before the opening hour arrived.  Nexus 4 will be WAY under water through New Years with all new shipments going to the major cell phone carriers to satisfy their B/Os first.

Nexus 10 is being built by Samsung and it is back in stock right now, but initial sales ripped through the world's supply in the first hour of the first day of sales with massive backorders which have just now begun to clear.  Samsung builds their own chips, so they have a good supply for their own manufactured products.

$249 Samsung Chromebook.  It is the ORIGINAL, very first ever ARM based Chromebook and it is sold out, period.   The $199 Acer unit will take some pressure off of it, as the Acer is a better deal dollarwise, but if you wanted the original ARM Chromebook, nothing else will do.   I think folks will buy it and then eventually forget about it under the wave of future better units next year, but that's my take, not theirs, right now.

==================

People are screaming at Google for not having a big enough supply of units (you pick which one -- same screaming is going on).

Google is smiling and saying "We patterned our supply model after Apple's but it wasn't nearly enough, apparently".

Apple sells 3 million units first week then demand drops off to a steady state.

Google sells 3 million units the first weekend then the demand shoots up as people realize what it is and what it is worth to them.

Apple sells at a PREMIUM+ price point.

Google sells at their cost + handling margin through the Play Store and retail partners.

Gooble isn't primarily into selling hardware units to make a lot of money.   ASUS, Samsung and LG make what they normally make selling to a big telecon company, so you can see that AT&T and Version and the boys are taking a nice profit margin off of what they sell to you normally.

Now, Google and its partners are NOT taking a loss selling these units.   The fact Wamart can sell the things at the same price as the Play Store says that there is enough markup in the units for Walmart to make their normal accustomed cut.

The fact that Acer can uncork a Chromebook for $199 and still have a profit margin to share with Walmart says a WHOLE LOT about the Microsoft tax that we have been eating all these years.

It also says that when the rest of the Far East suppliers kick in, the cost of a unit will go down significantly.

Samsung, LG and Acer are not "crap building" companies, and although every screen gluing issue they have had got plenty of press, there is not a lot of refurb out there to be had.

==================

Microsoft sales have broken 250,000 units on Win8 SurfaceRT, looking to break a million by New Years Day.    Microsoft programmers are busy writing apps for the stuff as nobody else is.

==================

Apple is still the 800 pound gorilla in computing.  Sales of 17 million IPads and 26 million IPhones were seen in Q3, with no word yet on Christmas sales figures.

http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/24/apple-q3-2012-hardware-sales-numbers/

====================

Amazon Kindle Fire HD sales are good, but not as good as last year.  Amazon is sitting silent on the Christmas sales numbers so far, merely noting that 22% of all tablets sold this Christmas will be Kindle Fires.  If this is factual, then it is down from last year, but still considerable.

Also note that Texas Instruments, the chip provider for the Fire has dumped out of that business for this upcoming year.

Internal Wintel email traffic, office of the Bald Ballmer

WE NEED MORE SACRIFICIAL GOATS TO BURN,  THE COMPUTING PRESS HAS TURNED AGAINST US !!!!   WE ARE BEING RIDICULED FOR OUR HOLIDAY SALES BY OUR MANUFACTURING PARTNERS !!! PUT THE HORNS ON SOMEBODY ELSE AND FIRE THEM !!!    HURRY, I CAN HEAR THE FAINT BAYING OF THE HOUNDS AS THEY COME FOR US !!!

.... else they may look at me ....

"Also interesting is the fact that Intel will be under new leadership as it makes that transition. After 8 years as CEO and more than 40 years with the company, Paul Otellini will be retiring in May, 2013."

NEXT, quick trot out the promise of a really great new chip, something that should really be a world changer so everyone won't sell our stock.  Gotta give the stock holders hope to cling to.   Give it a name we've never used before, so it will sound BRAND NEW.
  It can be the same interation shift on Clover Trail to quad core that we have planned all along, but rename it quick like so it sounds new.   Hurry, the sound of that pack of press dogs is getting closer and closer ....  durn it, that baying really gets on my nerves, why won't those stupid dogs lose the trail with all the red herrings we've thrown across it ....

http://liliputing.com/2012/11/intel-atom-bay-trail-quad-core-chips-coming-in-...

Whew, them stupid baying dogs have finally gone quiet .... they really had me worried for minute or two --- I thought my job might be in danger.   Lemme splash a little water on my face and rub my baldness with a towel for a little bit to get the sweat off.

Whut the hey?  Why is the towel is snagging on something ? .....    (peers into the mirror)

(gasp)    Shocked

....   oh no  ----  wee little bitty horn tips are starting to stick up out of my skull ......

================

..... and the good news is that the internal motivation levels hits a new peak over at Wintel .....

All the dead wood at the top has been chopped down and thrown into the bonfires that were lit underneath the scape goats.   "New" chips have been declared at Wintel and Ballmer is wearing him a hat now-a-days until he can get his plastic surgery appointment to get his proto-horns removed.
