Not sure if it was a backfire, or...

I've had a weird occurrence happen a few times now.  Always on a cold morning around 55 degrees, after 2-3 minutes of warming up with choke, always within 5 seconds of taking off.  I turn out of my driveway and make a moderate acceleration to 25-30.  I've got this strange PFFFT sound, like the bike was scoffing at me.  Very hard to tell, but it seems like it comes from the head area.  One time it made the sound twice in rapid succession.  It DEFINITELY is not the same sound as the backfire I've got.  After that, it doesn't happen again.  It's only happened on the fairly cold mornings I've ridden, and even then only 3 times I can count.

Any idea what it is?  Just a bike characteristic?  Her way of telling me to woo her a little more before I invite her in for a cup of coffee?

For reference:  She's an '01 with a little over 5k on the clock, dyna SE muffler and a K&N cone with an extended intake throat.

I didn't figure it was a biggie.  My nature is to be BEYOND curious; if I don't know what something is then it bugs the crap out of me until I get some kind of answer.  I might start wearing my helmet cam on cold mornings just to see if I can capture the "poltergeist" on video.

What do you think?  Remaining rich gases combusting in the headpipe?  Maybe her heart is just skipping a beat.   Cheesy

EDIT:  I didn't mention in the original post, the sound is very abrupt.  Definitely less than half a second.

with that k&n, you hear more of what's going on in the intake.

I bet what you're hearing maybe a sluggish valve.

At what rpm do you hear it?  accel or gear change?

for the most part, think it common at idle to hear it once in a while, especially if your idle speed is low.

marvel mystery oil is supposed to lube the top end.

Agreed, I definitely hear a LOT more intake noise with the cone.  I get a nice little squeak around the lower to mid-range.  I kinda like it.   Smiley

I usually get the PFFFT during the first couple of seconds of acceleration out of the drive way, before I shift up to 2nd.  FWIW, my idle speed is set to approximately 1,100-1,200 rpm.

Yeah, again I figure it's a non-serious issue related to it being cold.  It's supposed to be cold on Monday.  If it's not too wet from tomorrow's predicted thunderstorms, I'll try to get a video.  If not, I won't get a chance to do so for a long time due to work.  Angry
