Oil leak - left side foot peg kickstand mount bolt
11/05/12 at 02:11:06

I've had this bike for a couple months.  2004 with 3300 miles.  Never had any leak issues.  I've got the bike on a stand now and have removed left and right side foot pegs and the kick stand.  Now I noticed quite a significant puddle between the lift stand and bottom of motor.  I suspect the two long bolts that go clear through both foot peg brackets and the block must, when torqued, pinch some gasket somewhere.  Since I've got the bike apart for a while I put those bolts back in with some washers to take up the slack and gave them a tightening to see if the leak stops while bike is apart.  Does anybody know if these bolts pinch a gasket?  I can't seem to see this in the Clymer manual.  I'm just the type of guy that likes to know WHY things happen.  So if anybody could shed some light on this I'd appreciate it.

YOure on it. The peg bolts pinch the engine cases together.

no gasket just sealer.
Oil will collect there sealed up in a bottle til you uncork it.

Thanks.  Before I put the post up, I figured this might be the case.  I have the bolts in now (not the peg mounts).  Had to take up the slack with washers as spacers.  Tighted it down, put a clean sheet of paper under the bike.  Went to bed.  Woke up and saw the paper is dry.  So I think this worked.  Strange that this bolt would be designed that way.  But if anybody else has anything to add, please do.

I've joined the forum for all my bikes.  Alot of knowledge out there, and I appreciate it.

The engine mount bolts are not designed to hold the oil in....the case is supposed to be oil-tight as a result of the sealant....and the engine case screws are supposed to hold things together.

You must have some form of failure in the case sealant right where the mounting bolts pass through.  If you can get the bolt holes sealed up and keep oil from flowing out......that would be great as you will not have to split the cases to fix the leak.

We've seen several oil leak events traced back to lack of torque on peg bolts, its no biggeee;;

Yupper tightenin mine fixed my erl leak off my kickstand bolt. I figured it was a dry socket so I never considered it to be the problem but someone from the above replies- verslagen, OF, JOG I don't remember who- told me to tighten those bolts & I haven't leaked a drop since.

Its been a few days since I removed my pegs and bolts.  Caused a pretty nice oil puddle, but thanks to research on this forum, I put washers and spacers and the orignal bolts in.  Tightened them.  NO LEAK.  I have to take it apart to put my aftermarket pegs on in a few days.  I will be sure to do it all at one time, so the bolts are out only temporaritly.  But I'm convinced now that this loose bolt causes leaks.  In my case they were both out entirely and it was a large leak.  It seems to be nothing serious other than it leaked my fresh oil out.  Small price to pay to know exactly what caused the issue.

Just be sure you don't forget to top it back off after getting those pegs installed.  Wink

Thanks.  I will.  I had to top it off already just to see if it was still leaking.  At the angle i had the bike on the stand, the window went from top of the viewing window to bottom.  Glad I had extra.
