How to get melted, burned-on nylon off of exhaust?
11/01/12 at 13:11:00

A some nylon cloth touched the exhaust pipe just after shutting the bike off.  There is about 2 sq" of hard black plasticky stuff on the exhaust pipe.

What's the best way to get it off without putting any scratches in the chrome?  In aircraft where you don't care too much about the appearance of stuff covered up by panels, it is common to heat it up and wipe it off while it is gooey from the heat.  I'd rather not do that.

Any other ideas?

Oven cleaner. Watch the over spray, let it sit overnight and use a plastic putty knife.

I believe Youzguys or someone said steam iron cleaner worked great on hot pipes also.

I did, it does.
Faultless Hot Iron Cleaner.  Run the bike for a while, get the exhaust HOT.  Old terry cloth towel, wash cloth.  Fold it over a few times for insulation, put the goop on, scrub it.  Repeat.

You could leave it there as a reminder not to do it again.

I use a good old american nickel. Heat the pipe put on your leather work gloves and rub.

Sorry, it wasn't anywhere near as interesting as black nylon fishnet.  My first wife was asking me what I wanted to do with an old USAF flightsuit, as I was getting off the bike.  She let it touch the exhaust pipe for about a millisecond.  Just an unfortunate, very momentary, accident.

I tried rubbing the marks with a cloth, and also with a wadded up paper towel while it was pretty stinkin' hot.  Nothing happened other than browning the cloth and paper towel.

I guess I'll try the oven cleaner.  That's the only thing I haven't tried yet.

Thanks for the inputs.

I had what I think was a tennis ball hit the exhaust pipe and I got that mess off with 'Pink Solution' and a bit of rubbing.

I thought those flight suits were made from Nomex.  They always told us that the Nomex fabric would not melt in a fire, but would instead char to an ash.  This way, you'd leave a better looking corpse after a crash.....

I got my winter flight suit back when they were nylon, not yet nomex.

We all hated nomex anyway, because instead of burning off in a fire, it would just get hot, melt, and stick to you,... increasing the damage from the burn.

I had something like this happen and it came right off after an old grizzly biker told me to put a pre-68 penny in a pair of pliers/vicegrips and just scrape it off like a snow scraper.

It came off within 10 minutes; i had spent several hours previously with metal polish, steel wool, etc. with no effect.  It also took off all the boot scuffs on the pipe.

The 68 and earlier penny has a higher copper percentage than later and is softer than the chrome so there were no scratches.
