new vibration at 10mph
10/31/12 at 09:29:08
After all that's happened this week, it's no surprise that something isn't quite right.
I've notice a new vibration/shudder, but I can only seem to create it when coasting and it only happens for a brief period around 10 mph.
It feels like something is dragging or rubbing. It's not tied to engine speed. I didn't notice anything when spinning the wheels by hand.
Any ideas?

You said that you smashed the turn signal, is it possible that you jar/twist the rear fender some? Do you have saddlebags/supports that might be bent in enough to rub on the tire? Just shooting ideas out here.

Well,.. you've ruled out engine,.. so,.. check that the brakes aren't dragging,... warped rotor?... loose front drive pulley?...
How old are the tires?...

Just 10 MPH? Heck, hang that thing up & put it in gear,,
( Note: Not recommended to allow the rear tire to contact the ground while spinning in gear without a rider)
Just be careful, dont pollute yourself with Carbon Monoxide & get hung up in the spokes or belt.

No saddlebags.
Tires are brand new.
It's a new front wheel with an old rotor on it, maybe it's not perfectly lined up.
The front brake didn't appear to be dragging when I spun the wheel by hand.
It could be something in the rear. I'll see if it looks sideways.
It goes away under 10mph and over 10mph. I don't know what that has to do with it. Some harmonic frequency?

I wonder if the drive belt gets some harmonic vibration at that speed? Maybe check your drive belt for tension.

I don't recall if there was a sound. I'll try to pay more attention on my ride home.
I can feel it very distinctly in my foot pegs. Maybe something got loose when I dug the right peg into the pavement yesterday.

I get a similar vibration but only when I slowly decelerate from around 55-60mph, been going on for months and it's annoying as hell. Do you think it come from internal engine?

It's possible that the vibration was there all along,.. and your "peg readjustment" made it more apparent...
... also,.. once you have an oopsie,.. you become more focused on your bikes behavior...

People pay a lot closer attention to a vehicle after a crash. I promise you, people inspect a car a lot closer when they pick it up from the body shop than when it came off the lot, new or used.

Did you retorque the motor mount/footpeg mount long bolts after your crash -- you stretched them, you know. Nothing can move without them moving too.
Might as well retorque all three of the motor mounting long bolts down low and the three up at the top as well.
If not, your motor may be moving on you due to loose bolts.

I had thought about that, but didn't do it.
I'll add it to the list, may not get to it immediately.
