are the indicator brackets despensable?

One of my indicators is broken and needs to be changed. The chrome indicator housing/bracket was a bit of a pain to get off and so what I'm wondering is do I actually need to put it back on? ie. can I just attach my new indicators to the mudguard directly? the new indicators don't fit in the large holes provided by the original housing/bracket anyway. What's more it's crazy heavy.
but
I want to be safe carrying a passenger - are the chunky indicator brackets there for structural support or are they just part of the look? (not my favourite bit of the savage anyway so was thinking about ditching them - let the customizing begin!)

what falls off in vegas stays in vegas.
those 'side rails' are somewhat structural, they stiffen the rear fender.
but certainly aren't as good as they could be or light either.

The mounting bolts on the non-sissy model only span about 5" of fender...
So,.. I wouldn't expect it to be doing much,.. structurally...

ok I'll tell my girlfriend it's safe as long as she's not a sumo wrestler - what could possibly go wrong?

had a rethink and does anyone know if the older savage indicator brackets fit on later s40 bikes? I would like to put a backrest on mine and the newer brackets don't seem to allow for that.
anyone help me out here before I pull the trigger on a pair?
