Gas cap and steering lock keyed alike?
10/16/12 at 12:41:48

Is there anyway a locksmith (or anyone else) could rewicker the gas cap and/or steering lock so they would both use the same key?  I detest having to carry two keys for one vehicle.

Easy,.. don't bother locking the steering... our bikes are worthless on the criminal market...
... plus,.. if anybody wanted it... it's light enough for a couple of guys to throw in the back of a truck, steering lock or not...
Huh...

Not without a lot of modification to the steering lock. The cylinder for the steering lock is a lot smaller.

Epoxy or solder your keys together......so the key has two blades!

Maybe I could set up an RF keyfob, so I wouldn't have to have any keys at all.

I tried the keychain, as my current wife suggested it.  I couldn't get either lock to move at all.  There was no way those little silver balls, all strung together like that, would fit into those tiny little key slots.  I pretty much have to use one of the keys to get the locks to move at all.

I don't know if you are serious or not, but that thought does have some merit,... maybe.  I'll have to ponder on it.
-- Maybe hack the heads of the keys off so they just barely stick out of the lock (say, 1/8") then braze them together.  I dunno.
-- Maybe rivet them together with one rivet so they could be closed like a pocket knife when not in use, but then opened up when needed to unlock a lock.

hmmmmmmmmm

Yep, forget the steering lock, get a 6' chain and lock to a pit bull.   Undecided

If you go with the 2 keys connected, Id suggest 90* instead of 180*.

Better yet, drill them, put a washer between them & rivet them, then you wont have a Poke you when you bend over hazard in your pocket,

I'm pretty sure the key blanks are different, meaning that the innards of the two different lock mechanisms are different thus one key will not work in the other lock as opposed to residential locks where all you have to do is manipulate the pins to fit the key...

Yes, they are quite different.  That is why I bring up this whole idea.  It's not an easy thing to do.  If they could use the same key blank, like you say, it would be $10 given to a locksmith to key them alike.

How about just yanking all of the tumblers out of the gas cap - now anything will turn it. Since you're still using a key I doubt anyone will notice it's not the proper key and since it still has a lock, no one can just twist it off and walk away with it. Unless you have some actual enemies or the people in your area are just that mischievous, no one will ever find out unless you tell them.
