How about just yanking all of the tumblers out of the gas cap - now anything will turn it. Since you're still using a key I doubt anyone will notice it's not the proper key and since it still has a lock, no one can just twist it off and walk away with it. Unless you have some actual enemies or the people in your area are just that mischievous, no one will ever find out unless you tell them.

The lock on the gas cap, 99.99% of the time, is not helpful.

-- Nothing more than an inconvenience for me.
-- I have to use the key to get the cap off to get gas.
-- It might malfunction.
-- A professional bad guy won't be bothered at all by the gas cap lock.
-- It probably prevents not much more than casual vandalism.

The problem with taking out the gas cap tumblers is,... I still need two keys.  One for ignition and one for the steering lock.

I wonder what the engineering rationale was for using two completely different locks for ignition, gas cap, toolbox, and lock.

That's a valid thought for a stock Savage, but I have a RYCA conversion.  No locked toolbox.  I made one of my own in the tailpiece. See Double RYCA, reply#248.

bean counter rationale, problably not engineering.

I think I've used my fork lock once or twice... to find out how it works.

I'd have to try it again just to remember if it did work.

Since the idea was thrown out there... and not really picked up...

The cylinder can be filed to accept any key.  And you can fiddle with the pins to work with the available key.

Do you mean the steering lock could be "adjusted" to accept the ignition key?

I believe that is what he is suggesting but you'd have to trim the rails that guide the key because they are in two different locations.
Not sure.

I love my C50.
OFF. Clock wise is igniton on.
OFF. Counter clockwise is fork lock.
One more CCW is parking lights and fork lock (stupid option if you ask me)
All in one.

I didn't even think of that. I suppose ruining the ignition lock is out of the question...

I'm not sure I'd try my idea on the fork lock, there would have to be at least one tumbler in there to prevent it from turning on its own. I think this all comes down to your own confidence modifying that lock.

Maybe I should just go to a locksmith and tell him to do something to the fork lock so it will accept an ignition key.

If you've ever re-keyed a lock before, you'll have the basics.
I haven't taken one these apart, so you'll have to use your own judgement.
I'd check 1st to see if the ig key will even fit in this cylinder. Disassemble it down to the cylinder, take a flat hack saw blade and remove all the key lands so a straight key will go in.  Widen the slot so the ig key will slip in.  Make sure all the burrs are out of the pin holes, clean and deburr well.  Then I'd fiddle with at least 1 pin till it will work with the ig key.

It's not worth it to him. He's not gonna risk the lock getting messed up and the possibility you will run around saying he ruined your lock. This is something you're gonna have to try on your own.
