Savage leans over too far when on kick stand
10/16/12 at 12:12:45

Hi all

My 03 leans over way too far when on kickstand.  It looks like the stand arm has a slight curve in it.  I would like to straighten it out (this would make it lean over less far) but I don't know if I can safely heat it up enough to bend it back to straight.

Does anyone know if the stand can be safely straightened? Huh

Thanks in advance

John

It'd be much easier to offer an opinion if we had a picture.

Yes it can.  It is plain old mild steel.  If you heat it enough to make it bend easily (red or orange), though, the chrome will be damaged.

Pics would help a lot to see if your only problem is a bent prop. Suzuki calls the sidestand a prop.

Did you inspect where it bolts on to the bike,.. where it pivots on what Suzuki calls the prop bolt?  All that looks ok? (the prop bolt, the hole in the prop, the holes in the frame bracket)  I bought a Yamaga half a century ago that someone modified.  One of the "modifications" was to replace the "prop bolt" with one that was skinnier than stock,.. which made the prop flop around and let the bike lean too far over when parked.

The part number changed for 2003 so I don't know what diff that makes.

One thing you could do is take the prop off, go to a dealer that might have one in stock and compare the two to make sure your situation is only that the prop is bent.

Or maybe just equally befuddled & stalling for time hoping to come up with a good answer for the guy,, Thats where I was,, cant speak for you,,
Good point someone made about makin sure the bolts are correct & tight,

Heat isnt required to bend it, IF its bent, Im sure it wasnt heated. How it got bent is a decent ?? ,, Somebody big sitting on it parked, maybe? If its actually bent in the leg part, Itll fix, but if its something in the hinge area, it mite be a bit of an ordeal & Rowboats Puck It answer mite just be the best solution. Now, I really would like a pic and if you could go to the bike & stand it up off the stand & wiggle it in & out & see if theres a stupid amount of slack in it that way.
The pic needs to be from the front or rear while its leaning on it & one looking down at it, while its up, so we can see the swingarm, sidestand together so we can compare the gap of yours to ours,,

when I had it towed, the driver over tightened the strap and bent the kickstand.

straightened out very easily and no problems since.

Thanks for the great responses, guys.  I will take some pics tomorrow and post them.  The mount for the prop is in good shape and tight. I will probably puck it as well as straighten it.

Nothin wrong with HJC. I used one to bend in a cab corner on a little pickup. Needed 2 stitches in my lip where the jaw bar folded in a little.. catch held. Still worked even. Of course I bought a new one anyway.,
Modular. I like being able to rasie it up & get fresh air /talk to people,,
